HUMAN REMAINS FOUND NEAR PALOMAR MOUNTAIN — BUT AUTHORITIES SAY THEY ARE NOT BELIEVED TO BE ANGELICA BROPHY

The discovery of human remains near the same mountain area where missing California mother Angelica Brophy’s vehicle was found has added another unsettling development to a disappearance that has remained unresolved for more than a month. But investigators are warning against assuming the two cases are connected.

PALOMAR MOUNTAIN, Calif. — A volunteer search-and-rescue team made a disturbing discovery this week while working in the Palomar Mountain area: human remains were found in an embankment near South Grade Road.

The location immediately drew attention because Angelica Brophy, a 44-year-old Oceanside mother and emergency-room nurse, disappeared in July after entering the Palomar Mountain area.

But authorities have emphasized an important point:

The remains are not currently believed to be Brophy.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said the remains were discovered on Aug. 12 near the 33,000 block of South Grade Road in Pauma Valley. The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation, while the Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the person’s identity and cause and manner of death.

WHY THE DISCOVERY IMMEDIATELY RAISED QUESTIONS

Brophy was reported missing on July 6.

Earlier that afternoon, surveillance footage reportedly showed her at Harrah’s Resort Southern California in Valley Center. Roughly 50 minutes later, investigators believe she entered Palomar Mountain State Park, an area where she was known to hike.

Three days later, her vehicle was discovered abandoned inside the park.

That triggered an extensive search involving multiple agencies, search-and-rescue teams, canine units and divers.

Yet Brophy was not found.

THE SEARCH FOR ANGELICA HAS BEEN EXTENSIVE

Authorities searched rugged terrain around the park, including steep canyons and dense vegetation.

A dive team also searched Doane Pond after investigators determined that Brophy’s Apple Watch had last pinged near a trailhead in that area, according to reporting from the Los Angeles Times.

Investigators later conducted additional targeted searches based on newly developed leads.

Still, there was no confirmed sign of Brophy.

Her disappearance remains an active investigation.

THEN CAME THE DISCOVERY OF THE REMAINS

On Aug. 12, a volunteer search-and-rescue team found human remains in an embankment near South Grade Road.

The location was less than three miles from the entrance to Palomar Mountain State Park.

Because of the proximity, the discovery naturally raised questions about whether investigators had finally found a clue to Brophy’s disappearance.

But authorities quickly made clear that there was no established connection.

The remains are not currently believed to be hers.

ANOTHER MYSTERY NOW BEGINS

Investigators have not publicly identified the person whose remains were discovered.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will be responsible for determining the identity as well as the cause and manner of death.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is handling that investigation separately. Authorities have also said there is currently no known threat to the community.

That means investigators are now dealing with two unresolved mysteries in the same general region:

Who is the person whose remains were found?

And:

What happened to Angelica Brophy?

At this point, officials have not said that the answers are connected.

BROPHY’S FAMILY IS STILL WAITING

Brophy is a mother of two and an experienced hiker who was familiar with Palomar Mountain.

Her brother Ramon Fabregas previously joined volunteers searching for her and said the family would continue looking until they found her.

For those closest to Brophy, the discovery of unrelated remains is unlikely to provide relief.

Instead, it leaves the central question unanswered.

POLICE HAVE NOT ESTABLISHED FOUL PLAY

Another crucial detail should not be overlooked.

Oceanside police have previously said investigators have not found evidence of foul play in Brophy’s disappearance.
