250-Pound Black Bear Dies After Becoming Trapped Inside Car in Colorado Springs

A 250-pound (113-kilogram) black bear died after becoming trapped inside an unlocked vehicle in central Colorado Springs, Colorado, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

The bear reportedly climbed into the car through an unlocked door but became trapped when the door closed behind it. Unable to escape, the animal tore apart much of the vehicle’s interior while apparently trying to find a way out.

Officials believe the bear may have remained trapped inside the vehicle for several days before it was discovered. The bear ultimately died from the extreme heat that accumulated inside the car.

CPW confirmed the incident and used it as a reminder for residents to take precautions in areas where bears are active.

Wildlife officials urged people to lock their vehicles at all times and avoid leaving food, trash, or other scented items inside that could attract bears.

The incident highlights the potentially deadly consequences of leaving vehicles unsecured in bear country.
