When a factory accident completely severed both of Jiang’s legs at the thighs, the injury appeared to leave almost no path back to walking.

But the higher the amputation occurs on the body, the more complicated the operation becomes.

A complete thigh-level amputation involves large muscles, major arteries and veins, large nerves and a considerable amount of tissue.

The amount of muscle that can be damaged by interrupted circulation is especially important.

When circulation is cut off, tissue begins to deteriorate.

Restoring blood flow can itself create additional physiological stress as substances that accumulate in damaged tissues suddenly enter the circulation.

Performing the procedure on both legs increases those risks and dramatically expands the amount of reconstruction required.

That helps explain why Jiang’s case has attracted international attention.

Doctors and Chinese medical reports have described it as the first documented case in which complete bilateral thigh replantation ultimately resulted in the patient recovering walking ability.

A limb can technically survive replantation without ever returning to useful function.
