KAREN SOLOMON FOUND DEAD AFTER DAYS-LONG MANHUNT — POLICE CALL CASE A TRAGIC MURDER-SUICIDE

The days-long search for Karen Solomon, the Massachusetts woman wanted in connection with the death of her husband, has ended in a devastating discovery.

Worcester police announced Monday that a body found in a wooded area near Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital is believed to be Solomon, 58. A handgun was reportedly discovered near the body. Authorities said the weapon was not her husband’s police service weapon.

Police Chief Paul Saucier said investigators believe the case was a “tragic murder-suicide,” although authorities emphasized that they still have work to do to establish the complete sequence of events.

 IT BEGAN WITH A 5:30 A.M. EMERGENCY CALL

On August 18, Worcester police responded to the couple’s home shortly before 5:30 a.m. after an emergency call.

Inside, officers found Worcester Police Patrolman Kurt Solomon, 57, critically injured. Authorities said he had suffered an injury involving a sharp object.

Kurt, a 31-year veteran of the Worcester Police Department, was later pronounced deceased.

Karen was not at the home when officers arrived.

Doorbell-camera footage later showed her walking away from the area wearing casual clothing just minutes after police were dispatched. Investigators subsequently issued an arrest warrant charging her with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

THE SEARCH GREW BY THE HOUR

Karen was considered potentially armed and dangerous, triggering an extensive search involving multiple law-enforcement agencies.

Investigators focused heavily on Coes Pond and surrounding areas, using tracking dogs, drones, divers and other resources.

The search continued for nearly a week.

Then, on Monday, two employees walking near Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital discovered a body in a wooded area.

Police said further examination led them to believe the remains were those of Karen Solomon. Official identification was still pending at the time of the announcement.

 A HANDGUN WAS FOUND NEARBY

A handgun was located near the body.

Authorities said it was not Kurt Solomon’s service weapon. Police have described Karen’s apparent cause of death as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the latest reporting.

The discovery has dramatically changed the investigation.

What began as a search for a missing woman wanted in connection with her husband’s death is now being treated by police as a suspected murder-suicide.

THE WOMAN BEHIND FIRST H.E.L.P.

The case has drawn particular attention because Karen Solomon was not an unknown figure.

She was a prominent advocate for police and first-responder mental health and co-founded First H.E.L.P., an organization focused on supporting first responders and their families and raising awareness about suicide prevention.

That background has made the circumstances surrounding her final days especially difficult for those who knew her work.

Kurt, meanwhile, had dedicated more than three decades to the Worcester Police Department and was remembered as a veteran officer and father of two.

 POLICE SAY THERE WAS NO KNOWN HISTORY OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

One detail investigators have specifically addressed is the couple’s relationship.

Chief Saucier said there was no known history of domestic abuse involving the Solomon family.

That does not explain what happened inside the home, and investigators have not publicly released a complete motive or detailed account of the events leading up to Kurt’s death.
