WOMAN WANTED IN DEATH OF VETERAN POLICE OFFICER FOUND DEAD — AUTHORITIES BELIEVE TRAGEDY WAS A MURDER-SUICIDE

WORCESTER, Mass. — A days-long manhunt for a Massachusetts woman wanted in connection with the death of her police-officer husband has ended in tragedy after she was found dead behind a rehabilitation hospital, authorities said.

Karen Solomon, 58, was discovered in a wooded area behind Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital in Worcester at around 1 p.m. Monday, August 24, according to the Worcester Police Department.

A handgun was found near her body.

Police now believe the deaths of Karen and her husband, Worcester Police Patrolman Kurt Solomon, 57, were part of what Chief Paul Saucier described as a “tragic murder-suicide.”

The discovery brings an end to an intensive search that began after Kurt was found dead inside the couple’s home nearly a week earlier.

But many details surrounding the deaths remain private.

A VETERAN OFFICER FOUND DEAD

Kurt Solomon was a 31-year veteran of the Worcester Police Department.

Authorities responded to a medical call at the couple’s Wildwood Avenue home shortly before 5:30 a.m. on August 18.

Kurt, who was off duty at the time, was found dead inside the residence.

Investigators quickly began searching for Karen, who was identified as a person wanted for questioning in connection with her husband’s death.

Authorities warned the public that she should be considered armed and dangerous.

No criminal charges had been filed against Karen before her death.

THE SEARCH FOR KAREN

The investigation immediately triggered a major search across Worcester.

Police released surveillance footage that appeared to show Karen walking near Coes Pond in the early morning hours after Kurt’s death.

Investigators urged residents to remain alert and warned people not to approach her if they spotted her.

For nearly a week, her whereabouts remained unknown.

Then, on Monday afternoon, two employees at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital were reportedly walking in the area when they discovered a body in the woods behind the facility.

Police responded and identified the woman as Karen Solomon.

A handgun was recovered nearby, authorities said.

POLICE SAY THE CASE ENDED IN A TRAGEDY

Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier said investigators now believe the case was a murder-suicide.

However, authorities have released few details about what happened inside the Solomon home.

Saucier said domestic-violence laws restrict what police can disclose about the circumstances surrounding Kurt’s death.

He also emphasized that the Solomon family had no known history of domestic abuse, according to the department. Other people were reportedly present at the residence when Kurt died.

Those details have left many questions unanswered about what happened in the hours before Kurt was found.

A WOMAN WHO SPENT YEARS HELPING FIRST RESPONDERS

The case has drawn particular attention because of Karen’s own work supporting police officers and other first responders.

Karen co-founded First H.E.L.P., an organization dedicated to reducing the stigma surrounding mental-health struggles among first responders and their families.

The organization also honors first responders who have died by suicide.

Karen was additionally involved in efforts that helped advance the Public Safety Officer Support Act, federal legislation signed in 2022 that expanded benefits for first responders suffering certain mental-health injuries and deaths by suicide.

Her advocacy makes the circumstances surrounding her own death especially heartbreaking for the first-responder community.

First H.E.L.P. released a statement expressing profound grief following the deaths.

“No words can adequately convey the depth of grief surrounding this tragedy,” the organization said.

KURT LEAVES BEHIND TWO SONS

Kurt Solomon’s death has also devastated his police family.

The veteran officer is survived by his two sons, Niklas and Brandon, as well as his mother, Shirley, and brothers Karl and Eric.

He was remembered as a longtime member of the Worcester Police Department who dedicated more than three decades to serving his community.

His funeral was scheduled for Tuesday, August 25.

For his fellow officers, the loss represents not only the death of a colleague but the end of a 31-year career devoted to public service.

A CASE THAT LEFT A COMMUNITY WAITING FOR ANSWERS

The discovery of Karen’s body means the search is over, but it does not necessarily answer every question surrounding Kurt’s death.

Investigators still must establish the precise sequence of events inside the home and determine what led to the fatal incident.

In a statement read by Chief Saucier, the Solomon family described themselves as “heartbroken and rudderless” while thanking the agencies and community members who helped during the investigation.
