NANCY GUTHRIE MYSTERY: SIX MONTHS LATER, KEY CLUES REMAIN UNDER SCRUTINY
TUCSON, Ariz. — Nearly seven months after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Arizona home, investigators are still searching for answers in a case that has drawn national attention.
Guthrie, the mother of TODAY co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson. Authorities believe she was taken against her will, and her whereabouts remain unknown.
DNA AND DIGITAL EVIDENCE REMAIN UNDER REVIEW
Investigators have collected DNA and video evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has said that forensic analysis of evidence remains ongoing. Authorities have also examined surveillance footage and digital information surrounding the night Guthrie disappeared.
Blood found at Guthrie’s home was previously determined to match her DNA, adding to investigators’ belief that she did not simply leave voluntarily.
RANSOM NOTES ADDED ANOTHER TWIST
The investigation took another turn after alleged ransom notes connected to Guthrie’s disappearance were released publicly.
One message reportedly demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin, while another claimed Guthrie had died.
However, the FBI later determined that the ransom notes were fake, according to a source familiar with the investigation. The notes therefore do not establish that the person who wrote them had actually abducted Guthrie.
Still, investigators have examined the language used in the messages.
A retired law-enforcement investigator who reviewed the notes said repeated grammatical patterns and unusual word choices could potentially provide clues about their author.
NEW CLUES — BUT NO ARREST
Authorities have not announced an arrest in connection with Guthrie’s disappearance.
Investigators have also continued examining surveillance footage that appears to show a masked individual near Guthrie’s home around the time she vanished.
The FBI previously released images of the individual in hopes that someone might recognize the person or provide information that could help investigators identify them.
HUMAN REMAINS FOUND — BUT NOT LINKED TO GUTHRIE
The investigation received another unexpected development after human remains were discovered in a remote desert area approximately 15 miles from Guthrie’s home.
However, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said there was no indication at this time that the remains are connected to Guthrie’s disappearance.
Authorities have therefore continued treating the discovery as a separate matter while the search for Guthrie remains active.
THE FAMILY IS STILL WAITING FOR ANSWERS
For Savannah Guthrie and her family, months have passed without knowing what happened to Nancy.
The family has repeatedly appealed for information and has urged anyone who may know something about the case to come forward.
A combined reward of more than $1 million remains available for information leading to answers in the case.
THE BIGGEST QUESTIONS REMAIN UNANSWERED
Who took Nancy Guthrie?
What happened inside her home that night?
Who was the masked individual captured on surveillance footage?
And could DNA, digital evidence or another forensic clue eventually identify the person responsible?
For now, investigators have pieces of a complicated puzzle — but no arrest and no confirmed location for Nancy.
Nearly seven months later, Nancy Guthrie is still missing, and her family continues to wait for the one answer they want most: where is Nancy?
