MONTANA FAMILY MASSACRE: NEW DETAILS EMERGE ABOUT THE 8 VICTIMS AND THE SUSPECT

BILLINGS, Mont. — New details are emerging after eight members of the same extended family, including four children, were killed during a Sunday family gathering in Billings, Montana.

The suspected shooter, 44-year-old Alan Smith, was also found critically wounded and later died after an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. The investigation remains active as detectives work to reconstruct what happened inside the home.

A FAMILY DINNER TURNED INTO A TRAGEDY

According to relatives, the family had gathered for their regular Sunday dinner when Smith unexpectedly returned to the home.

Smith had previously lived with his parents, Dana and Barb Smith, but relatives said they had recently asked him to move out. He reportedly returned to the residence only weeks later.

Investigators have not publicly confirmed that being asked to leave was the motive, and authorities continue to examine what led to the violence.

FOUR GENERATIONS WERE AMONG THE VICTIMS

The victims ranged in age from 7 to 92, representing four generations of the family.

CHARLOTTE’S FINAL CALL FOR HELP

One of the most heartbreaking details to emerge involves 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere.

Family friends said Charlotte called 911 during the incident and tried to get help for her relatives.

Her courage has led family members and members of the community to describe her as a hero.

Authorities received the emergency call shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday. Responding officers reported hearing additional sounds coming from behind the residence before the home became engulfed in flames.

THE HOUSE WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE

When officers arrived, the residence was already becoming engulfed in flames.

The fire created a major obstacle for investigators. Much of the home was destroyed, leaving detectives to carefully search the damaged structure for evidence.

Authorities later confirmed that eight victims had been found inside and that Smith had suffered an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
