MONTANA FAMILY TRAGEDY: EIGHT RELATIVES KILLED DURING SUNDAY DINNER

BILLINGS, Mont. — A family gathering near Billings ended in tragedy Sunday evening when eight relatives, including four children, were killed inside a home that was later engulfed in flames.

Authorities identified 44-year-old Alan Smith as the suspected perpetrator. Smith also died after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities. Investigators are continuing to examine what happened inside the home and what led to the killings.

FOUR GENERATIONS WERE AMONG THE VICTIMS

The victims represented four generations of the same blended family, ranging in age from 7 to 92.

Those identified were Smith’s parents, Dana and Barb Smith, his grandmother Evelyn Smith, his sister Megan Ghekiere, and four children: Owen Ireland, 13; Chloe Ireland, 7; Landon Ghekiere, 15; and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12.

Megan’s husband, Adam Ghekiere, was working at the time and was not at the residence.

CHARLOTTE’S FINAL CALL FOR HELP

Among the most heartbreaking details is the story of 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere.

According to family friend Jennifer Mercer, Charlotte called 911 as the incident unfolded and attempted to get help for her family.

Mercer described the girl as a hero, saying her family wants people to remember the courage she showed during the emergency.

THE HOME WAS SOON ENGULFED IN FLAMES

Police responded to the residence shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday following an emergency call.

Officers reported hearing gunfire coming from behind the home. Smoke then began rising, and the residence became engulfed in flames.

The fire significantly complicated the investigation and recovery of evidence. Authorities have been carefully searching the damaged property for clues that could help reconstruct the sequence of events.

SMITH HAD RECENTLY BEEN ASKED TO MOVE OUT

Family members told The Associated Press that Smith had lived with his parents for years before they recently asked him to leave the home.

Brad Ireland, the father of two of the children who died, described Smith as a reclusive person who spent much of his time alone on his computer.

Ireland said there had been concerns about Smith’s behavior, although he was not aware of a history of physical violence or prior arrests.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive.

A FATHER LEARNED OF THE TRAGEDY AT WORK

Adam Ghekiere, Megan’s husband and an airport rescue firefighter, was working when he heard information about an active emergency over a dispatch radio.

He attempted to contact his family and rushed toward the residence.

By the time he arrived, the house was burning.

He later learned that his wife and children were among those who had died.

THE COMMUNITY IS NOW MOURNING

The tragedy has left surviving relatives grieving the loss of multiple generations at once.

Fundraisers have been established to help the families with funeral expenses, counseling and other costs. Community members have also begun gathering to honor the victims.

Investigators are still working to determine the precise sequence of events, the circumstances surrounding the fire and what motivated the attack.
