MOTHER OF A66 CRASH VICTIM MAKES EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE REQUEST, URGING MOURNERS TO GIVE HER SON THE “SEND-OFF HE DESERVES”

MIDDLESBROUGH, England — The mother of 23-year-old Michael Cahill, one of five young men who died in the devastating A66 crash, has made an emotional request to friends and supporters ahead of a planned memorial gathering.

Cahill was among five people traveling in a Volkswagen Passat that entered the A66 traveling in the wrong direction before colliding with a marked police vehicle near Middlesbrough on August 22. Two Cleveland Police officers, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, also died in the collision.

A MOTHER’S FINAL TRIBUTE

Cahill’s mother has urged those who knew her son to come together and give him what she described as “the send-off he deserves.”

She asked friends and supporters to bring bikes, jeeps, cars and quad bikes to the planned balloon release in his memory.

The gathering was intended as a way for those close to Cahill to remember him and pay tribute to his life following the devastating crash.

SEVEN PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES

The A66 collision claimed seven lives in total.

The five occupants of the Passat were identified by Cleveland Police as Michael Robert Cahill, 23; Jakub Matusiak, 23; Makai Saddington, 18; Theo Rae, 17; and Cole Robert Worthy, 17.

The two police officers who died were PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38.

The officers were traveling in a marked police vehicle when it was struck by the Passat.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation.

Police had been pursuing the Passat before the pursuit was discontinued. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is separately investigating the police response and the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Authorities have also made a number of arrests as part of a wider investigation into suspected organized crime and other offenses connected to events surrounding the crash.

Police have urged people to avoid speculation while investigations continue.

TRIBUTES BRING MIXED REACTIONS

While Cahill’s family and friends have sought to remember him, some previous memorial gatherings connected to the crash have attracted criticism after reports of dangerous driving, flares and other disruptive behavior.

That has created tension within the local community, where residents are still mourning the seven people who died while also dealing with concerns about public safety.

For Cahill’s mother, however, the upcoming gathering is ultimately about remembering her son.

Amid the grief and controversy surrounding the A66 tragedy, one mother’s message remains deeply personal: she wants Michael to be remembered and given the farewell she believes he deserves.
