Two men died in a fiery wrong-way collision Wednesday on Montague Expressway in Santa Clara, according to police.

The collision occurred on the Montague Expressway overcrossing at Lafayette Street after police say a GMC SUV was driving the wrong way and hit a Honda pickup truck. Police say the GMC was driving over the speed limit going the wrong way on northbound Montague Expressway, but they currently do not know the exact speed.

Footage showed one of the vehicles engulfed in flames after the crash. Firefighters were also seen using the Jaws of Life to extricate a person from the other vehicle involved in the collision.

On Wednesday police said at least one person died in the crash, but on Tuesday they updated that both drivers died at the scene.

“I approach the crash and I see smoke coming out of the car,” witness Chris Traverse said. “It’s horrific.”

Traverse’s dashcam captured smoke coming from one of the vehicles before it became engulfed in flames. He saw Santa Clara Police and Fire Department crews arrive.

“I hope they’re okay,” Traverse said, thinking about the people involved in the accident. “I saw firefighters put out the car that was on fire and use Jaws of Life on the other car and also saw off the roof the other car.”

Montague Expressway was closed in both directions following the crash, and authorities asked drivers to use alternate routes around the scene.

Santa Clara police are expected to provide an update Wednesday afternoon on the circumstances surrounding the crash.
