FAMILY SUES SPORTS COMPANY AFTER 6-YEAR-OLD GIRL DIES IN HORRIFIC BADMINTON ACCIDENT

What began as a family vacation in Maine turned into an unimaginable tragedy when a six-year-old girl was struck by part of a badminton racket.

Now, more than two years later, her family is taking legal action against the company that manufactured the racket.

The family of Lucy Morgan has filed a wrongful-death and product-liability lawsuit against Franklin Sports, alleging that the racket was dangerously defective.

A FAMILY VACATION ENDED IN TRAGEDY

The incident happened on June 1, 2024, at a rental cottage in Limerick, Maine.

According to the lawsuit, Lucy was nearby while her siblings played badminton.

During the game, the racket’s metal shaft allegedly separated from its handle.

The metal portion struck Lucy in the head, causing a devastating injury.

She was rushed for emergency medical treatment and later airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Lucy died four days later, on June 5, 2024.

THE FAMILY SAYS THE RACKET SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED

The lawsuit alleges that the racket’s handle and metal shaft were not adequately secured.

It also claims that the adhesive connecting the components was defective or insufficient and that the racket lacked a secondary restraint that could have prevented the metal portion from separating during use.

The family further alleges that consumers were not adequately warned about the possibility of the racket separating during normal play.

Those are allegations contained in the lawsuit and have not been established as facts by a court.

HER SIBLINGS WITNESSED THE INCIDENT

The lawsuit says Lucy’s three siblings witnessed what happened.

Her parents reportedly heard her screams and rushed to help.

The family says the tragedy has left the children with severe emotional distress in addition to the devastating loss of their sister.

The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, including claims related to funeral expenses and emotional suffering.

FRANKLIN SPORTS RESPONDS

Franklin Sports has not accepted the allegations.

The company expressed sympathy for Lucy’s family and said it takes product quality and safety concerns seriously.

Because the lawsuit is pending, the company said it could not comment on the specific allegations but is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
