POLK COUNTY, Ga. — A heartbreaking confrontation in the middle of the night has sparked outrage across Georgia after a beloved miniature donkey named HeeHaw was fatally shot by a Cedartown police officer during a search for a missing child.

The incident happened around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at a pasture connected to Elsberry Riding and Farm in Polk County.

According to HeeHaw’s owner, Hannah Israel, officers entered the property while searching for a missing person. Israel said the family was not notified before officers entered the pasture.

Then came the encounter that has now triggered an internal investigation.

HEeHAW RAN TOWARD THE OFFICERS, OWNER SAYS

Israel said officers told her that HeeHaw ran toward them while braying.

The officers reportedly believed the animal posed a threat.

According to the family, an officer first attempted to use a Taser on the donkey. When that reportedly did not stop him, the officer fired, killing HeeHaw.

The circumstances surrounding the encounter have not been fully released by authorities, and officials have not publicly explained exactly why the donkey was considered an immediate threat.

The officer involved has not been identified.

Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome confirmed that an officer was placed on administrative leave while the department’s command staff investigates the incident.

“HE WAS MY SON”

For Israel, the incident was far more than the loss of an animal.

HeeHaw had been bottle-raised and was described by his owner as a deeply social animal who regularly interacted with people.

He had participated in petting zoos and was accustomed to being around children and adults.

“He was my SON,” Israel wrote in a social media post following the incident.

She said HeeHaw had been especially close to the family and followed her much like a dog would.

WSB-TV reported that Israel had bottle-fed HeeHaw from the day he was born and described him as well-socialized and comfortable around people.

THE MISSING CHILD WAS FOUND SAFE

The police presence at the property was part of a nighttime search for a missing child.

According to a statement cited by 11Alive, a Cedartown officer had been called by Polk County police to assist with the search.

At the time HeeHaw was encountered, the child had not yet been located.

Thankfully, the child was later found safe at a church near the pasture.

That detail has added another layer to an already emotional case: officers were responding to an urgent search, but the operation ended with the loss of a family pet.

POLICE AGENCY CLARIFIES WHO WAS INVOLVED

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has stressed that its agency was not involved in the incident.

According to the sheriff’s office, the agencies involved were the Polk County Police Department and Cedartown Police Department.

The sheriff’s office expressed condolences to HeeHaw’s family and said the community should direct questions about the incident to the appropriate agencies.

Cedartown authorities have not released the officer’s name or provided a detailed account of what happened immediately before the encounter.

OWNER VOWS TO SEEK LEGAL ACTION

Israel has said she intends to pursue legal action and launched a fundraiser to help cover attorney fees.

The fundraiser quickly attracted significant attention online, with tens of thousands of dollars donated by people who were moved by HeeHaw’s story.

The family has questioned why the donkey was considered such an immediate danger and how officers entered the pasture.

Those questions are now expected to be examined as the internal investigation moves forward.
