A Kansas City-area family has turned painted rocks into a source of hope and joy for 6-year-old Madison Lang as she battles cancer.

“It started with one container with maybe four or five rocks,” said Madison’s father, Zach Lang.

Madison, who loves rocks and painting them, has a special place for them called Maddie’s Rock Garden.

Earlier this year, Madison received a difficult diagnosis.

“Maddie was diagnosed in late May with rhabdomyosarcoma,” Zach said.

The cancer is located in her stomach. To help her cope with the news, family and friends began painting rocks and adding them to her garden.

“Everybody really wanted to chime in and send Maddie some rocks as she’s navigating this journey,” Zach said.

The rocks feature words of hope, encouragement, and things that make Madison happy. Madison’s mother, Lauren Lang, said the small, colorful rocks put a smile on her face.

“It’s the smallest thing. It might have a rainbow or a butterfly,” Lauren said.

The family said receiving new rocks in the mail brightens Madison’s day.

“It means a lot to her just to have a little inspiration, have a little joy,” Zach said.

The rock garden started about three months ago. Since then, it has grown to more than 200 rocks.

“We’ve had, like I said, strangers that we don’t even know send us rocks,” Zach said.

Even a local school classroom joined in, making rocks and delivering them on Saturday morning.

“I don’t think she quite comprehends exactly what she’s going through or how brave she is,” Lauren said.

The family said they are always accepting new rocks for Madison’s garden. They have a P.O. Box set up for deliveries.

Family members said Madison’s first surgery is scheduled for Tuesday.
