A routine garbage collection run in San Francisco turned into a desperate rescue mission after a passerby heard shouting coming from inside a garbage truck — leading firefighters to a man buried beneath a massive pile of trash.

It was around 4:10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, when a Recology garbage truck was making its early-morning route through San Francisco.

Then someone nearby heard something that immediately seemed wrong.

There were cries coming from inside the truck.

A passerby alerted the driver, who stopped the vehicle and listened.

The shouting was real.

Someone was trapped inside.

And he was buried beneath the garbage.

THE DRIVER HAD ALREADY COMPACTED ONE LOAD

According to the San Francisco Fire Department, the truck had already picked up a dumpster and emptied its contents into the vehicle.

The driver had also compacted the load once before the shouting was heard.

That meant rescuers were facing an extremely dangerous situation.

Dumping the contents of the truck could potentially have caused further injury to the trapped man.

So firefighters made a decision that would turn the rescue into a painstaking race against time.

They would have to remove the garbage by hand.

Around 25 firefighters arrived and began carefully digging through the enormous pile of waste.

FIREFIGHTERS SPENT MORE THAN TWO HOURS DIGGING

The man was completely buried beneath the trash.

Firefighters could not simply empty the truck because of the danger to the trapped person.

Instead, they worked through the pile piece by piece.

The rescue continued for more than two hours.

Throughout the ordeal, the man remained conscious and able to communicate with rescuers.

San Francisco Fire Department Capt. Mariano Elias said he personally heard the man yelling several times.

At one point, firefighters were able to reach his arm.

Paramedics immediately began treatment while he was still partially buried.

They administered an IV to help protect him from crush syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition that can occur when muscles remain compressed for a prolonged period.

The medical team knew that simply getting him out was not the end of the danger.

HE WAS STILL AWAKE WHEN THEY FINALLY REACHED HIM

Before 7 a.m., firefighters finally succeeded.

The man was brought out of the garbage truck alive.

He was described as awake, oriented and able to communicate.

He was then taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.

The precise extent of his injuries has not been publicly detailed.

It also remains unclear exactly how he was injured — including whether his injuries occurred when he fell into the truck, while he was buried beneath the garbage, or during the compaction process.

HOW DID HE END UP INSIDE THE TRUCK?

Investigators now have another question to answer.

According to firefighters, the man had apparently been inside a dumpster before it was emptied into the garbage truck.

Capt. Elias said it was possible he had entered the dumpster while looking through discarded items or seeking food.

But authorities have not publicly established exactly why he was inside.

What is known is that he was ultimately transported from the dumpster into the truck along with its contents.

The incident remains under investigation.

Recology spokesperson Robert Reed described the incident as highly unusual.

According to the company, a similar incident had occurred around 15 years ago.

But this time, the outcome depended on someone hearing a sound that could easily have gone unnoticed in the early hours of the morning.

Firefighters arrived.

And instead of simply unloading the truck, roughly two dozen firefighters spent hours carefully removing its contents until they could reach the trapped man.
