DULUTH, Ga. — In a photograph, Samantha Izaguirre holds her firstborn son, Zion. He was stillborn following a crash she and her husband were in.
“I was about six months, and we started to get a feel of their personality, and we were feeling kicks and everything, and it was really nice,” Samantha Izaguirre said.

Police said Samantha and her husband, Symeon Izaguirre, were traveling on Satellite Boulevard in Duluth on June 20 when Dorin Lupas, who investigators say was street racing and driving 94 mph in a 45 mph zone, crashed into their vehicle.
“The last thing that we remember is someone coming at us, like just a flash of white light,” Symeon Izaguirre said.
The couple spent about a month in the hospital recovering from broken bones, bruises and other injuries. Samantha, who was 20 to 24 weeks pregnant at the time of the crash, needed emergency surgery and continues to need additional surgeries.
But Symeon Izaguirre said the physical recovery was only part of what the couple endured. According to Symeon, the other driver and police initially blamed him for the crash that ultimately led to the death of his unborn son.

“It wasn’t until last week that we found out that he was charged,” Symeon Izaguirre said. “So, up until then, it’s been two months. We’ve been having to have conversations about me going to prison for this situation.”
Lupas now faces a first-degree feticide by vehicle charge for the loss of the unborn child, along with two felony counts of serious injury by vehicle for the injuries to Symeon and Samantha. He’s also charged with reckless driving, racing, unsafe lane change and speeding in connection with the alleged street race. Warrants say Lupas’ accelerator was fully depressed for three seconds and that he hit a top speed of 94 mph, and that a witness told investigators they heard his engine revving loudly as he accelerated.
The couple is still coming to terms with losing their first child, but they said they are grateful they were given the opportunity to meet and hold Zion. Symeon started an online fundraising page to help cover Samantha’s ongoing medical care.

“We are grateful for every prayer, message, and act of support during this difficult time,” the page states. “Every contribution goes directly toward her recovery and helping us get through the long road ahead.”
Samantha said she and her husband could already see pieces of themselves in their son.
“I think he has his eyebrows and everything and his lips,” Samantha Izaguirre said. “He says he has my nose, and he thinks he has my eyebrows.”
