FROM UNDER AN OVERPASS TO A 4.0 GPA: THE REMARKABLE TURNAROUND OF DANNY ELLERD

A few years before this photo was taken, Danny Ellerd was standing on street corners in Oklahoma City, holding a sign and asking strangers for spare change. Trapped in a 15-year spiral of addiction, he had suffered multiple overdoses, lost stable housing, and faded into the margins of society—so unrecognizable that his own father once drove right past him on the street before realizing the homeless man was his son.

His rock bottom came beneath an Interstate 40 overpass. When police located him on outstanding warrants, they found a man weighing just 92 pounds and critically ill. Instead of taking him to jail, officers rushed him to a hospital, where doctors fought around the clock to save his life and treat a severe infection in his hand.

When Danny was finally discharged, he walked into the recovery program Hope Is Alive carrying nothing more than a single Walmart bag of clothes. His transformation didn’t happen overnight; it was forged through thousands of small, daily choices:

• Staying sober one day at a time.

• Showing up and asking for help when things got tough.

• Reaching back to support others on the same path.

By August 2023, Danny was managing key responsibilities in his recovery program, working part-time, and enrolled as a full-time student at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City (OSU-OKC). Majoring in Computer Information Systems, he went on to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA. His academic excellence and dedication to community service culminated in April 2025, when OSU honored him as a Women for OSU Scholar.

Today, Danny’s journey has come full circle. The man who once depended on the kindness of strangers now spends his life giving back—working directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, sponsoring men in addiction recovery, and publishing his book, Recovery Is Possible.
