FOUR-YEAR-OLD KALEIA MU’A FIGHTS BACK AFTER HORRIFIC BUGGY ACCIDENT AT RUGBY TOURNAMENT

A four-year-old girl is showing signs of improvement after suffering life-threatening injuries when she was struck by a buggy at a junior rugby league tournament on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Little Kaleia Mu’a was attending the Prime Nines Tournament at Tugun Rugby League Club with her family on Sunday, September 27, when the devastating accident happened shortly after 10 a.m.

She was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital and admitted to the Children’s Critical Care Unit.

Kaleia suffered a fractured skull, multiple brain bleeds, internal bleeding and a broken leg in the collision.

For her parents, Joe Mu’a and Amber Morton, the days that followed were described as the most frightening of their lives.

They remained at their daughter’s bedside as doctors treated her serious injuries, while Kaleia’s three brothers, Kingston, Kohen and Khobie, rallied around their little sister.

A TERRIFYING FAMILY DAY

What began as an ordinary family outing quickly turned into an emergency.

Kaleia was at the rugby tournament when she was struck by a buggy being used at the venue.

Two other children were also injured in the incident. Both boys suffered leg injuries.

A woman in her 60s was also hurt and suffered minor soft-tissue injuries.

Emergency crews responded to the scene before Kaleia was transported to hospital for specialist treatment.

The accident was described by those supporting the family as a devastating “freak accident.”

The Prime Nines organisers said they were in contact with the Mu’a family and were sending their support to Kaleia and her loved ones.

Gold Coast Health confirmed that Kaleia’s condition had stabilised.

Her father Joe later shared an emotional update with supporters, saying the most important thing he wanted people to know was that his little girl was going to be okay.

“The nights have been incredibly long,” he said, while explaining that the family was taking her recovery “one day, one hour at a time.”

The Mu’a family is closely connected to rugby league, with the family having moved to the Gold Coast from Toowoomba around 18 months ago to support their son Kingston’s sporting career.

Kingston plays rugby at The Southport School and has attracted attention for his potential as a young player.
