Elkins reportedly fled the area, leading police on a pursuit into neighboring Bossier Parish. Officers exchanged gunfire with him, and he was killed.

The scale of the loss stunned Shreveport.

Police Chief Wayne Smith described the scene as one of the most difficult incidents his department had ever faced. Mayor Tom Arceneaux also urged the community to allow investigators time to determine exactly what happened.

In the weeks that followed, families and community members gathered to remember the eight children. They were honored as the “Eternal Eight” during funeral services in May, where relatives, first responders and local leaders gathered to celebrate their lives.

For the families, the investigation may explain how the tragedy unfolded, but it cannot undo the loss.
