Missing 6-year-old with special needs located by K-9

A missing nonverbal 6-year-old child has been found safe in the woods of a Delaware state park, thanks to the efforts of a hard-working police dog.

Patrol officers and a K-9 officer from the New Castle County Division of Police responded to Brandywine Creek State Park around 7 p.m. Aug. 27 after the child, who is nonverbal, was reported missing.

Master Cpl. DiGati and her K-9 partner, Fiasko, were taken to a wooded area believed to be the child’s last known location.

After receiving a scent from the child, officials say Fiasko quickly picked up the trail and led DiGati along a path into a secluded section of the woods.

As the K-9 team tracked, searchers heard a noise nearby.

A member of the team followed the sound and found the child in a heavily wooded, brush-covered area next to a pond.

The child was barefoot, muddy and wet but in good health. He was safely reunited with his family.
