13-Year-Old North Carolina Football Player Dies After Sudden Cardiac Arrest During Practice

A North Carolina community is mourning the loss of 13-year-old Caden Sorrell, a student at Northwest Guilford Middle School in Greensboro, after he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during football practice.

Caden collapsed on August 28, 2026, shortly after completing a lap around the field during practice.

He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors placed him on advanced life support, including ECMO and a heart-assist device, in an effort to save his life.

Despite extensive medical efforts, the damage was ultimately too severe, and Caden died on August 30.

Doctors Suspect Underlying Genetic Condition

Caden’s family said doctors suspect that an underlying genetic condition may have contributed to his sudden cardiac arrest. However, the exact cause of his death has not yet been determined.

Because of the concern about a possible inherited condition, Caden’s siblings are expected to undergo medical screening.

Caden’s sudden death has left his family, classmates, teammates and coaches grieving.

The tragedy has also highlighted the importance of recognizing potential underlying heart conditions in young athletes. While the exact circumstances surrounding Caden’s cardiac arrest remain under investigation, his family is now awaiting further medical answers while preparing for the loss of a young life that ended far too soon.
