DAY 200 OF THE NANCY GUTHRIE CASE: INVESTIGATORS STILL HUNTING FOR THE MASKED MAN

DAY 200 OF THE NANCY GUTHRIE CASE: INVESTIGATORS STILL HUNTING FOR THE MASKED MAN
TUCSON, ARIZONA — Two hundred days after Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Arizona home, investigators are still searching for answers — and the mysterious masked figure captured outside her house remains one of the most important clues in the case.
Guthrie, 84, was last seen after returning home late on January 31. She was reported missing the following morning after she failed to appear at church.
Investigators believe she was taken from her home against her will.
The case received a major breakthrough when the FBI recovered previously inaccessible surveillance data from the Nest doorbell camera at Guthrie’s home. The footage showed a masked person outside the residence during the early morning hours of February 1.
THE MASKED FIGURE
The person captured on camera was described by the FBI as a man of average build, approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall.
Investigators said he appeared to be wearing a dark face covering, gloves and a black Ozark Trail Hiker Pack.
One of the most unsettling images shows the masked individual apparently attempting to interfere with the home’s doorbell camera.
The footage also appeared to show what investigators believed could be a weapon or holster.
Yet months later, authorities have still not publicly identified the person.
A CLUE THAT MAY HAVE COME EARLIER
The investigation became even more complicated after sources told ABC News and CBS News that another image appeared to show the same masked man at Guthrie’s front door before February 1, the night authorities believe she disappeared.
In that earlier image, the person was reportedly not carrying the backpack.
However, officials have cautioned that the images themselves do not contain a date or time stamp, meaning claims that they were definitively recorded on different days remain unconfirmed.
If the earlier visit is ultimately confirmed, it could raise an important question:
Was someone watching Nancy Guthrie before she disappeared?
THE TIMELINE
Investigators have previously established several important digital clues.
Guthrie’s Nest doorbell camera was disconnected at approximately 1:47 a.m. on February 1.
The camera later detected activity at approximately 2:12 a.m., while Guthrie’s pacemaker application disconnected from her phone around 2:28 a.m.
Blood was also discovered near the front entrance of her home.
Authorities have said they believe Guthrie was abducted or otherwise taken against her will, but investigators have not publicly established exactly what happened after the masked figure appeared outside the house.
HUNDREDS OF LEADS — BUT NO ANSWER
The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have received thousands of tips since Guthrie disappeared.
Investigators have searched neighborhoods, desert terrain and other areas around Tucson while continuing to examine digital evidence and surveillance footage.
At one point, a black glove discovered during the search attracted attention because it appeared similar to one worn by the masked figure. Subsequent testing, however, did not establish that the glove was connected to Guthrie’s disappearance.
The FBI has also continued examining ransom-related communications that emerged after the disappearance. Some messages were determined to be fraudulent, while the bureau later said certain other communications were still being evaluated.
THE MYSTERY REMAINS
Perhaps the most frustrating part of the case is that investigators have a striking image of the person they believe may be connected to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance — but still do not have a publicly identified suspect.
The masked figure is visible.
The timeline contains digital clues.
Investigators have searched extensively.
And yet Nancy Guthrie has not been found.
Her daughter, TODAY co-host Savannah Guthrie, has continued to plead for answers and has repeatedly said the family will not stop searching for her mother.
Two hundred days into the investigation, the central questions remain:
Who was the masked man?
Why was he at Nancy Guthrie’s home?
And what happened to Nancy after the cameras captured him outside her door?
For investigators, those questions remain unanswered.
For Nancy’s family, they are the questions that matter most.
Two hundred days have passed. The search for Nancy Guthrie continues.
This case remains under investigation. Details that have not been confirmed by authorities should not be treated as established fact.
