BABY S HAD JUST BEEN BORN AT 37 WEEKS — THEN COURT REVEALED ONE OF THE MOST BASIC DETAILS ABOUT HER FAMILY WAS STILL UNKNOWN

Baby S had only just entered the world.

Born at 37 weeks in Sheffield in the early hours of Sunday, the newborn girl would become the center of a criminal investigation within hours.

Her mother, Andrea Skopova, 20, later went to hospital. Medical staff alerted police shortly after 5 a.m. after recognising that she had recently given birth.

What followed has left investigators trying to reconstruct exactly what happened during the brief window between Baby S’s birth and the discovery that something was terribly wrong.

But when the case reached court, prosecutors revealed a striking detail about the baby’s family.

HER MOTHER’S BOYFRIEND IS CHARGED

Skopova’s current boyfriend, Peter Horvath Jr, 19, is among the four adults charged with the murder of Baby S.

He is the son of Peter Horvath Sr, 38, and Nina Horvathova, 37, who are also defendants in the case.

The prosecution told the court that Skopova is Baby S’s mother and that she is the girlfriend of Horvath Jr.

But Horvath Jr is not believed to be the baby’s father.

That detail has emerged as prosecutors and investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s final hours.

FOUR ADULTS FACE SERIOUS CHARGES

Skopova, Horvath Jr, Horvath Sr and Horvathova have all been charged with murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and perverting the course of justice by allegedly taking steps to conceal what happened.

A 15-year-old girl has also been charged with perverting the course of justice. She cannot be named because of her age.

All five defendants have been remanded in custody.

Two other women, aged 26 and 37, were arrested on suspicion of murder but remain on bail as the investigation continues.

WHAT HAPPENED TO BABY S?

The court heard that Baby S suffered 33 injuries, including 15 separate wounds to her face and torso.

Prosecutors also alleged that the newborn was wrapped in a towel and placed inside a blue bag before being left on top of a washing machine in an outhouse.

The allegations have not been proven in court.

The Crown Prosecution Service has stressed that proceedings remain active and that all defendants have the right to a fair trial. Prosecutors have also warned against online commentary or the sharing of information that could prejudice the proceedings.

A CASE THAT IS STILL BEING PIECED TOGETHER

The investigation began after police were called to a property in the Wincobank area of Sheffield following concerns for the newborn’s safety.

Now detectives are working to establish what happened after Baby S was born — who was present, what each defendant allegedly did, and how the baby’s final hours unfolded.

For investigators, one of the most basic questions surrounding the newborn’s family — who her father was — was still unresolved when the case reached court.

The trial is scheduled to begin on April 12, 2027, and is expected to last six to seven weeks. A further hearing is scheduled for October 2.
