DAD, 58, DIES AFTER BEING FOUND FACE-DOWN IN CRUISE SHIP POOL WHILE CELEBRATING HIS SON’S WEDDING

Stephen Junker had traveled to Italy for what should have been a joyful family celebration. Instead, a devastating accident aboard a cruise ship would leave the beloved father and pastor fighting for his life.

Stephen Junker, a 58-year-old pastor from Minnesota, has died weeks after suffering a catastrophic spinal cord injury aboard a cruise ship while celebrating his son’s wedding.

Junker was on the Sun Princess during a trip off the coast of Italy on August 16 when he fell into the ship’s swimming pool and was later found face-down and unresponsive, according to a family fundraiser and reports from The Sun.

What was supposed to be a celebration quickly became a desperate fight to save his life.

Found Unresponsive in the Pool

According to his family, Junker suffered a severe cervical spinal cord injury before nearly drowning.

The Italian Coast Guard transported him to a hospital in Naples, where he was immediately admitted to intensive care and placed on a ventilator. Doctors determined that he had suffered severe compression of his spinal cord at the C3-C4 level of his neck.

He underwent emergency spinal surgery the following day.

His injuries were so severe that doctors told his family he would be quadriplegic if he survived and would remain unable to breathe without mechanical assistance.

He also developed a multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection in his lungs, which his family said was likely connected to the near-drowning.

A Desperate Journey Home

After more than a week receiving treatment in Italy, Junker was transported back to the United States on August 23.

He was transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where doctors continued treating his devastating injuries.

For his family, the days that followed were filled with uncertainty.

A GoFundMe campaign was created to help cover the enormous medical and transportation costs. The fundraiser ultimately surpassed its original $30,000 goal.

Family members said Junker was able to communicate through nodding and facial expressions while receiving treatment, but his condition remained extremely serious.

Then came the devastating update.

“Steve Went to Be With Jesus”

On September 4, Junker’s daughter Elizabeth announced that her father had died.

The family said he passed away at 6:33 p.m., surrounded by his wife, children, parents and friends.

They also revealed that further diagnostic testing had shown injuries that could not be treated.

The family expressed gratitude to the medical teams at Mayo Clinic and to everyone who had donated and supported them during the weeks-long ordeal.

His death came just weeks after he had traveled to Italy to celebrate one of the happiest milestones in his family.

A Pastor Remembered for Helping Others

Junker was more than a husband and father.

He had spent years serving as a Lutheran pastor at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon, Minnesota, where he had served for nearly a decade.

Before entering ministry, Junker earned a pharmacy degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

His obituary described him as a man known for his animated sermons, love of conversation and willingness to help anyone who needed him.

He is survived by his wife, five children, grandson Jonah, parents, sister and many other relatives and friends.

From a Wedding Celebration to a Family’s Goodbye

The circumstances surrounding Junker’s accident have left a heartbreaking contrast: he had boarded the cruise ship to celebrate his son’s wedding, surrounded by family during what should have been a joyful occasion.

Instead, his loved ones spent the following weeks beside hospital beds in two countries, hoping he would survive.

He ultimately did not.

A visitation and funeral service are scheduled for September 11 at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Minnesota.

For those who knew Stephen Junker, the final chapter is not being defined only by the accident aboard the cruise ship.

It is being defined by the life he lived — as a husband, father, grandfather, pastor and a man remembered for showing up when other people needed help.
