A massive search is underway in one of Australia’s most rugged environments after a 31-year-old man disappeared into bushland in the Daintree.

Ariel Simon, an employee of environmental organization Rainforest Rescue, was last seen at around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, September 7, near Cape Tribulation Road at Cow Bay, Queensland.

He was seen entering the bushland.

He never returned.

Five days later, police, State Emergency Service volunteers and aerial crews are still searching for him, as his family and authorities remain deeply concerned for his welfare.

A SEARCH THAT BEGAN WITH A MISSING PERSON CALL

Police were notified at around 3 p.m. on September 7 that Simon had entered the bushland and had not come back.

A search-and-rescue operation was launched that same afternoon.

Since then, teams from Queensland Police, the SES, Rescue 510 and POLAIR have been involved in the effort.

Search crews have been working across the Cow Bay area, including bushland and surrounding residential areas.

As the days have passed, the search has expanded into difficult terrain surrounding the Daintree.

The area is known for dense rainforest, steep terrain and waterways, making the operation particularly challenging.

Aerial crews have also been assisting police in searching areas that are difficult to reach from the ground.

POLICE SAY HIS DISAPPEARANCE IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL

Police and Simon’s family have described his disappearance as out of character.

That detail has become one of the most concerning aspects of the case.

Simon is reportedly familiar with the bush and works for Rainforest Rescue, an organization involved in protecting and restoring rainforest habitat.

His knowledge of the environment makes his unexplained disappearance particularly concerning to those who know him.

Rainforest Rescue CEO Brandon Barber said Simon was well-liked within the local community, while residents have also expressed their concern as the search continues.

A STRANGE MESSAGE THE DAY BEFORE

One detail from the days before Simon disappeared has also drawn attention.

On September 6 — one day before he vanished — Simon posted a short message on Facebook.

It read:

“Good morning! Sending love. Peace out.”

There is no indication that the message itself proves anything about what happened to him, but it has inevitably attracted attention as investigators continue trying to establish his movements and state of mind before he disappeared.

THE DAINTREE IS BEAUTIFUL — AND DANGEROUS

The search is unfolding in the Daintree, an enormous rainforest environment in Far North Queensland.

The terrain includes thick rainforest, steep ranges and waterways.

The area is also known crocodile country, while mobile phone coverage can be extremely limited once people move away from developed areas.

Those conditions make locating someone in the bush particularly difficult and increase the urgency of the search.

Despite the challenging environment, crews have continued searching.

Police have also appealed directly to Simon, asking him to make contact with his family and let them know he is safe if he is able to do so.

“WE JUST WANT TO KNOW HE IS SAFE”

For Simon’s family and the people who know him, the uncertainty is now becoming increasingly painful.

There has been no confirmed sighting of him since September 7.

No explanation has been publicly established for why he entered the bushland or what happened afterward.
