As PC Matthew Blades was laid to rest, hundreds of police officers stood in formation and thousands gathered to pay their respects. But amid the solemn ceremony, one tiny detail revealed the heartbreaking truth behind the uniform — Matthew was also a dad.

The streets of Hartlepool fell silent on September 9 as family, friends, police officers and members of the public gathered to say a final goodbye to PC Matthew Blades.

The 37-year-old Cleveland Police officer was killed in the early hours of August 22 alongside his colleague, PC Tom Clough, 38, in a devastating collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough.

Five young men in a Volkswagen Passat also lost their lives in the crash.

But on the day of Matthew’s funeral, the focus was no longer on the circumstances of the collision.

It was on the man his family had lost.

A FATHER BEFORE A POLICE OFFICER

Matthew was not remembered simply as PC 2443.

He was a husband.

A father of two young boys.

A football coach.

A friend.

And, above all, the man his children called Dad.

Hundreds of police officers lined the streets outside St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Hartlepool, Matthew’s hometown.

Standard bearers represented police forces from across the United Kingdom, while pipers played “Amazing Grace” as the funeral procession made its way to the church.

Some officers wore patches carrying Matthew’s name and collar number — PC 2443 BLADES — alongside those of his colleague Tom Clough.

The scale of the ceremony reflected the respect Matthew had earned during his career.

But then came a much smaller tribute.

And it may have been the one that said the most.

JUST ONE WORD: “DAD”

On top of Matthew’s hearse was a white-and-red floral tribute.

It contained just one word:

“DAD.”

The tribute was from his two young sons.

They were only six and eight years old.

For the hundreds of officers standing in formation, Matthew was a colleague who had died while serving the public.

For those two boys, he was simply their dad.

The single word transformed the enormous police funeral into something deeply personal.

A FINAL GOODBYE FROM HIS FAMILY

Matthew’s widow, Sarah, stood alongside family members as her husband’s coffin was carried into the church.

His coffin was draped in the Union Flag, with his police cap placed on top.

His wife later described him as her beloved husband, best friend and the devoted father of their two boys.

“Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our superhero. Our Matt and Dad.”

The words captured the two sides of the man being mourned that day.

To his colleagues, he was a respected armed response officer.

To his children, he was their superhero.

THE CRASH THAT TOOK SEVEN LIVES

Matthew and Tom were travelling in a marked armed response vehicle on the A66 at South Bank, near Middlesbrough, when it was struck by a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way along the carriageway.

The collision happened at around 3:39 a.m. on August 22.

All seven people involved in the crash died.

The tragedy devastated two police families while also leaving the families of the five young men in the Passat grieving.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain the subject of investigation.

A COMMUNITY CAME TO STAND WITH THEM

The funeral was not attended only by police.

Members of the public also lined the streets of Hartlepool to show their support for Matthew’s family.

Police officers from forces across the country travelled to the town.

Flags were lowered.

Pipers played.

Colleagues stood shoulder to shoulder.

And a community that had never met Matthew came together to honour him.

The outpouring of support has continued since his death, with millions of pounds raised for the families of Matthew and Tom through a police-backed fundraising appeal.

FOR HIS SONS, HE WILL ALWAYS BE “DAD”

There were uniforms everywhere that morning.

Badges.

Flags.

Horses.

Pipers.

Ceremonial guards.

Thousands of people.

But perhaps the most powerful tribute was also the simplest.
