For weeks, the family of Tasia Fortune was left with devastating questions after the 29-year-old mother of four was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant home in Jackson, Mississippi.

Now, the investigation has taken a major turn.

On Friday, September 11, Jackson police announced the arrest of 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff in connection with Fortune’s death.

The arrest came just hours after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially classified Fortune’s death as a homicide.

THE CASE THAT LEFT A FAMILY DEMANDING ANSWERS

Fortune was found on August 3 behind an abandoned home near Road of Remembrance in west Jackson.

Her death quickly attracted widespread attention because of the circumstances in which she was discovered.

For weeks, however, investigators had not publicly identified a suspect.

Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, repeatedly questioned what had happened to her daughter. She previously said she did not believe Tasia had taken her own life.

Authorities ultimately received the state medical examiner’s determination Thursday evening that Fortune’s death was a homicide.

That finding allowed investigators to move forward with arrest and search warrants they had already obtained.

POLICE FIND THE SUSPECT AFTER SEARCH WARRANTS

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said investigators secured two search warrants and an arrest warrant for Ratliff.

Officers first went to execute the search warrants, but Ratliff was not at the location.

As investigators were returning to police headquarters, officers encountered him walking along Capitol Street.

He was then taken into custody without incident.

Police identified Ratliff as the first person arrested in connection with Fortune’s death.

According to authorities, he has been charged with murder.

BUT ONE CRITICAL QUESTION REMAINS

Despite the arrest, investigators have not revealed why Fortune died or what allegedly connected Ratliff to the crime.

Chief Brackney said Ratliff had an “association” with Fortune, but she declined to explain the nature of their relationship.

Police have also not publicly disclosed whether DNA evidence played a role in the arrest.

The chief stressed that investigators must allow the evidence to guide the case rather than speculate about details that have not been established.

Investigators have interviewed nearly 15 people, collected forensic evidence and followed numerous leads.

And police say the investigation is far from over.

“THIS IS NOT CLOSURE”

Brackney described the arrest as an important development — but warned that it does not represent the end of the investigation.

Additional arrests could follow.

For Fortune’s mother, however, the news brought an overwhelming mixture of emotion.

Spivey said she began crying when police informed her about the arrest and thanked investigators.

But despite the breakthrough, she said her family still does not have the answers they desperately want.

“We still don’t have a lot of answers,” Spivey said.

A MOTHER OF FOUR REMEMBERED

Fortune was a mother of four who had lived in Jackson for about a decade after moving from Kentucky.

Her family described a difficult life marked by periods of hardship, but those close to her also remembered her resilience.

A makeshift memorial grew near the property where she was found, with flowers, balloons, teddy bears, pinwheels and a framed photograph of Fortune.

Now, after weeks of uncertainty, her family finally has a name connected to the investigation.

But they still do not have the full story.

One arrest has changed the case. The questions surrounding Tasia Fortune’s final moments remain.

And investigators say the search for those answers is still underway.
