THOUSANDS WERE LEFT IN TEARS AFTER SEEING WHAT WAS WAITING ON PC MATTHEW BLADES’ HEARSE AT HIS FUNERAL

The heartbreaking tribute to the father-of-two became one of the most emotional moments of a funeral attended by hundreds of police officers and thousands of mourners.

There were tears across the streets of Hartlepool as PC Matthew Blades, 37, was given his final farewell.

The Cleveland Police officer was laid to rest in his hometown on Wednesday, September 9, after losing his life in the devastating A66 crash that also claimed the life of his colleague, PC Tom Clough, 38, and five young men.

But amid the enormous police presence, solemn music and emotional tributes, one detail on Matthew’s final journey stood out — a simple word that said everything.

“DAD.”

A FINAL MESSAGE FROM HIS FAMILY

As Matthew’s hearse approached St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Hartlepool, mourners could see a large white-and-red floral tribute displayed on the roof.

The flowers spelled out “Dad.”

It was a heartbreaking reminder that behind the uniform and the title of police officer was a husband and father whose two young sons had suddenly lost their dad.

Matthew was a married father of two boys, aged six and eight.

His family had previously described him as a devoted husband and an incredibly loving father.

His wife said her children would grow up knowing what an incredible father he was — a memory that would remain with them for the rest of their lives.

THE STREETS FILLED WITH POLICE

The funeral drew an extraordinary show of respect.

Hundreds of police officers lined the streets outside the church, with standard bearers representing police forces from across the United Kingdom.

Members of the public also gathered in large numbers to pay their respects.

Four mounted police officers stood guard while a police motorcycle outrider led the funeral procession towards the church.

Four pipers and a drummer played “Amazing Grace” as Matthew’s coffin, draped in the Union Flag, was carried inside.

His fellow officers could be seen embracing one another and wiping away tears as they prepared to say goodbye.

A HERO WHO WAS ALSO A DAD

Matthew was an armed response officer with Cleveland Police.

Away from policing, he was also a dedicated football coach at Seaton Carew FC, where he had recently taken on a role preparing to coach an under-seven team — a team in which his own son played.

That detail made his loss even more painful for those who knew him.

He wasn’t simply remembered as an officer who died in the line of duty.

He was remembered as a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a coach and a friend.

Cleveland Police Federation chair Lauren Somerville described him as a devoted husband and father who was deeply loved by his colleagues and family.

THE CRASH THAT CHANGED SO MANY LIVES

Matthew and PC Tom Clough were travelling in a marked police vehicle on the A66 near Middlesbrough in the early hours of August 22 when their vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Volkswagen Passat travelling in the wrong direction.

Both officers died.

Five young men in the Passat — Michael Robert Cahill, Theo Rae, Cole Worthy, Jakub Matusiak and Makai Saddington — also lost their lives.

The tragedy devastated multiple families and sent shockwaves through the local community.

“DAD” — JUST ONE WORD, BUT EVERYTHING IT MEANT

As the hearse slowly made its way through Hartlepool, people stood silently along the road.

Police officers lowered their flags.

Members of the public bowed their heads.

And above the hearse, the floral tribute carried a message that needed no explanation.

DAD.

For Matthew’s two young sons, that single word represented the person they had lost.

For his wife, it represented the man she loved.

And for the hundreds of officers who gathered to honour their colleague, it was a reminder of the life behind the uniform.

Matthew Blades was a police officer who gave his life serving others.

But on his final journey, he was remembered for something even more personal:
