Greek Couple Welcomes Baby Girl Conceived From Embryo Frozen for 22 Years

A Greek couple has welcomed a baby girl born from an embryo that had been frozen for approximately 22 years, in what has become a deeply emotional new chapter for their family.

Cristina Rapti-Tzelepi, 54, gave birth to the baby girl in Athens on September 9, 2026. Her husband, 60-year-old Constantinos Raptis, was by her side as the couple welcomed their newborn.

The birth carries profound meaning for the family. Cristina and Constantinos previously had one son, Giorgos, who was 21 when he died in a traffic accident in October 2025.

Following the devastating loss of their only child, the couple decided to use one of the embryos they had previously frozen. After undergoing treatment, they were able to welcome a daughter nearly a year after Giorgos’ death.

The baby was born weighing approximately 7 pounds 11 ounces (3.49 kilograms). Her parents named her Georgia, choosing the name in memory of her late brother, Giorgos.

For Cristina and Constantinos, Georgia’s arrival represents both a painful reminder of the son they lost and a new source of hope for their family.

Cristina said the fertility treatment had to move quickly because of age-related regulations governing IVF treatment in Greece. According to her, she had only around two and a half months remaining within the period in which she was permitted to undergo the treatment.

The couple’s decision to use the long-frozen embryo ultimately gave them the opportunity to welcome another child while carrying the memory of Giorgos forward.

Georgia’s birth is now being celebrated by her parents as a tribute to the son they lost and as the beginning of a new chapter for a family that has endured an unimaginable loss.
