It was supposed to be a holiday through one of Switzerland’s most beautiful Alpine regions.

Instead, it became a nightmare.

A Dutch tour bus carrying 45 adults crashed in eastern Switzerland on Thursday afternoon, leaving five people dead and all 40 other passengers injured.

The tragedy happened around 4:45 p.m. on September 10, on the road between the Alpine villages of Zernez and Susch, in the canton of Graubünden.

The bus was traveling through the Engadine valley when it left the roadway in a section affected by road construction.

It struck a roadside barrier and overturned.

Within minutes, a peaceful Alpine road became the scene of a massive emergency response.

Police, firefighters, ambulances and rescue helicopters rushed to the wreckage.

The scale of the response reflected the seriousness of the crash.

Seven rescue helicopters and 13 ambulance crews were involved in taking injured passengers to hospitals across the region.

But five passengers could not be saved.

The 40 survivors suffered injuries of varying severity.

Three were reported to be in serious condition, seven had moderate injuries, and another 30 suffered minor injuries.

The victims were adults, and authorities had not yet publicly identified those who died as of the latest reports.

For families back in the Netherlands, the hours after the crash were filled with fear.

A holiday that had begun only days earlier had suddenly become a desperate wait for news.

The coach was operated for Dutch travel company Oad, and the group had traveled from the Netherlands for a holiday in the Swiss Alps. Reports said the journey had begun on September 7.
