Two Rutgers Graduates Killed by Subway Train After One Tried to Rescue the Other

Two recent Rutgers University graduates and longtime friends were killed early Wednesday after being struck by a subway train at a Manhattan station, in a tragic incident that unfolded in the early morning hours.

The victims were identified as Navam Kaul and Malaika Chitre, both 24.

At approximately 3:15 a.m., the two friends were struck by a southbound No. 4 train at the Spring Street station in Manhattan. Both were pronounced dead following the incident.

According to preliminary accounts, Kaul had fallen or stepped onto the subway tracks.

Chitre then went down onto the tracks in an apparent attempt to help her friend. She reportedly tried to pull Kaul away from the path of the approaching train.

Circulated video footage appears to show the two sitting on the tracks as the train approached. The train operator reportedly had little or no time to stop before the collision.

The circumstances leading up to the tragedy remain under investigation.

Police are examining whether alcohol or other substances may have played a role, including the possibility that one or both friends were disoriented and unaware of the danger they were in.

However, authorities have not established that substance use caused the incident, and the possibility remains an investigative theory rather than an official conclusion.

The deaths have left friends, classmates and relatives mourning the loss of two young people who had recently graduated from Rutgers University and were described as longtime friends.

What began as an apparent attempt to help a friend ended in a devastating loss, with both young women dying at the same subway station in the early morning hours.
