THE VOICE UK INTRODUCES SHOCK “LOCKDOWN” TWIST AFTER TOM JONES DEPARTURE

The Voice UK is heading into a major new era — and fans will have to get used to some dramatic changes when the show returns for its next season.

Following the departure of longtime coach Sir Tom Jones, ITV has announced a major overhaul of the hit singing competition, including a brand-new audition twist that will change what happens when a contestant earns a coveted four-chair turn.

The new feature, dubbed the “Lockdown Button,” will allow coaches to immediately secure a four-chair contestant for their team.

That means one of the most familiar moments in the audition process is about to look very different.

THE “LOCKDOWN BUTTON” CHANGES THE GAME

Under the previous format, when all four coaches turned their chairs for a contestant, the singer had the opportunity to hear pitches from the coaches before ultimately deciding which team to join.

But that system is being replaced.

According to The Sun, the new Lockdown Button will allow a coach to press the button and automatically claim the contestant for their team after a four-chair turn.

The twist replaces the Rewind Button, which was introduced during the current series but will not return for the upcoming season.

The change could dramatically alter some of the show’s most competitive audition moments, because contestants will no longer necessarily have the final say over which coach they want to work with after all four chairs turn.

A COMPLETELY NEW COACHING LINEUP

The format change comes as ITV prepares for one of the biggest shake-ups in The Voice UK history.

On September 11, ITV officially announced the lineup for Series 15, confirming that Aitch and Cheryl will make their coaching debuts alongside returning coach Kelly Rowland and longtime coach will.i.am.

Cheryl will take the chair previously occupied by Sir Tom Jones. Aitch joins the panel after the departures of McFly’s Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher.

The hosting lineup is changing too.

Longtime presenter Emma Willis is leaving the show, while Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will take over hosting duties.

ITV also confirmed that Series 15 will air in 2027.

TOM JONES’ SHOCK EXIT

The changes follow Sir Tom Jones’ controversial departure after years as one of the defining faces of the show.

Jones, 86, has been associated with The Voice UK since its launch in 2012 and has returned as a coach across multiple seasons.

But in September, the music legend said ITV had made the decision to remove him from the coaching panel.

Jones said he had been told the reason was related to financial difficulties surrounding insurance, while ITV publicly described the changes as part of a desire to refresh the show with a new coaching lineup.

He also said ITV had offered him a reduced role rather than a full-time coaching position.

ITV thanked Jones for his years on the program, describing him as an important part of the show’s history and acknowledging the many memorable moments he had given audiences and contestants.

The broadcaster said it was still in discussions with Jones’ team about whether he could have some involvement in the next series.

FANS ARE ABOUT TO SEE A VERY DIFFERENT SHOW

With a new judging panel, new hosts and a completely different audition mechanism, The Voice UK is preparing for a significant transformation.

The four-chair turn has traditionally been one of the most exciting moments of the Blind Auditions because contestants could ultimately choose the coach they believed was right for them.

The Lockdown Button introduces another layer of strategy.

A coach will now have the power to secure a contestant immediately, potentially preventing the singer from making the final choice themselves.

That could create completely different dynamics between the coaches — and potentially some very unexpected team selections.

A NEW ERA FOR THE VOICE UK

For viewers, Series 15 will look noticeably different from the show that audiences have known for years.

Tom Jones will no longer be sitting in his familiar red chair.

Emma Willis will no longer be hosting.

Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher are also leaving the coaching panel, while Cheryl, Aitch, Kelly Rowland and will.i.am prepare to lead the next generation of contestants.

And now, with the introduction of the Lockdown Button, even the audition process itself is changing.

The next season will therefore mark more than simply a new cast.

It will be a new version of The Voice UK — one where a contestant who turns all four chairs may suddenly find that the choice of coach is no longer entirely theirs.

And fans will have to wait until 2027 to see exactly how the controversial new twist plays out.
