AUGUST “GUS” LAMONT, 4, VANISHED FROM HIS RURAL HOME — MONTHS LATER, POLICE NAME A SUSPECT

The search for four-year-old August “Gus” Lamont has taken a major turn after South Australian police identified a person known to the boy as a suspect in his disappearance.

But more than four months after Gus vanished from his family’s remote property, the little boy has still not been found.

Police say they are now treating the case as a major crime, after an extensive investigation failed to uncover evidence that Gus simply wandered away from the property.

A LITTLE BOY DISAPPEARS

Gus was last seen at around 5 p.m. on September 27, 2025, at his family’s Oak Park Station property in the South Australian outback, approximately 40 kilometers south of Yunta.

The four-year-old had reportedly been playing outside at the remote sheep station.

His family reported him missing later that evening, triggering an enormous search operation across the surrounding area.

According to police, the investigation initially considered the possibility that Gus may have wandered away from the property.

But months of searching produced no evidence showing that he had left the area on his own.

ONE OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST SEARCHES

Authorities mounted an extraordinary operation to locate the missing child.

Police, emergency services, Australian Defence Force personnel, State Emergency Service volunteers, an Indigenous tracker and community members all participated.

South Australia Police said the operation involved 163 police members and 230 additional resources.

Investigators searched the vast property and surrounding areas, including three dams and six mine shafts within a 10-kilometre radius of the homestead.

Aerial searches were also conducted across the enormous outback landscape.

Despite those efforts, investigators said they had found no physical or other evidence indicating that Gus had simply wandered away.

POLICE NOW BELIEVE SOMEONE KNOWN TO GUS MAY BE INVOLVED

On February 5, 2026, police announced that Gus’s disappearance had been formally declared a major crime.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said a person who had been living at Oak Park Station had withdrawn their cooperation with investigators and was now considered a suspect.

Police emphasized that Gus’s parents were not suspects at the time of the announcement.

Investigators had previously been examining two possibilities: that Gus had been taken by an unknown person, or that somebody known to him was involved.

Police said they had found no evidence supporting an abduction by an unknown person.

SEARCH WARRANT EXECUTED AT THE PROPERTY

Police also revealed that investigators had carried out a search warrant at Oak Park Station in January.

Several items were seized, including a vehicle, a motorcycle and electronic devices.

Investigators said they had identified inconsistencies and discrepancies during their examination of the circumstances surrounding Gus’s disappearance.

However, police have not publicly disclosed evidence establishing exactly what happened to the four-year-old.

The investigation remains active.

HIS FAMILY CONTINUES TO WAIT FOR ANSWERS

For Gus’s parents, the uncertainty has stretched on for months.

In a statement released during the investigation, they described their lives as shattered and pleaded with anyone who might know something to come forward.

They said that even the smallest piece of information could potentially help investigators establish what happened to their son.

Police have continued to stress that their focus remains on finding Gus and providing answers to his family.

Detective Superintendent Fielke said investigators would continue searching Oak Park Station and other nearby locations as new information becomes available.

MONTHS LATER, THERE IS STILL NO ANSWER

The case has now moved far beyond an initial missing-child search.

A massive operation involving hundreds of personnel has searched the remote property and surrounding landscape, while investigators have examined the movements of people connected to Gus and seized items during searches.

Yet Gus himself remains missing.

And although police now have a named suspect, being considered a suspect does not mean that person has been charged or found responsible for Gus’s disappearance.

For his family, the most important question remains unanswered:

Where is little Gus Lamont?

Until investigators locate him or establish what happened, the search for the four-year-old continues.
