A MORNING SWIM ENDED IN TRAGEDY FOR FORMER TEAM USA TRIATHLETE SPENCER KORWIN
SHELTER ISLAND, N.Y. — What began as a peaceful morning during a family vacation ended in tragedy for Spencer Korwin, a 38-year-old former Team USA triathlete, husband and father of two young daughters.
Korwin was vacationing with his wife, Carly, and their children when he went for a morning swim near the dock of The Pridwin Hotel on Shelter Island on September 2, 2026.
He entered the water at around 8 a.m. and did not return.
When several hours passed without him coming back, his wife alerted hotel staff, who contacted emergency services. A large search operation was launched involving local police, emergency medical crews, marine units and other responders.
Divers eventually located Korwin underwater near the same dock at around 3 p.m., roughly seven hours after he entered the water.
He was pronounced dead.
Shelter Island police have said the drowning appears to have been accidental, although the official cause and manner of death remained subject to review by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities have not indicated any criminal activity connected to his death.
AN EXPERIENCED ATHLETE WHO KNEW THE WATER
Korwin was an experienced endurance athlete who had spent years training and competing in swimming, cycling and running.
He qualified for Team USA in triathlon in 2012 and represented the United States at the Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand that same year. He was also a Gatorade-sponsored athlete.
After his competitive career, Korwin continued working in health and fitness.
He founded Korwin Health & Wellness in Manhattan in 2021, building a career around personalized fitness and wellness programs. He also operated a summer camp for children in Southampton.
His athletic background made the circumstances of his death especially difficult for those who knew him.
Local officials have emphasized that even experienced swimmers can face unpredictable conditions in open water. The area around Shelter Island is affected by tides and currents, particularly in narrow waterways.
John Kirincic, a master mariner with the Southold Town Police Department, said conditions appeared calm that morning, with no fog or obvious severe weather. However, he noted that currents in the area can be strong because of the narrow passage through which the tide flows.
HIS FAMILY WAS AT THE CENTER OF HIS LIFE
Away from competition and his professional achievements, Korwin was known above all as a husband and father.
He and Carly had two young daughters, Sadie, 4, and Colette, 1.
A fundraising campaign created following his death described Spencer as a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend.
The campaign was established to support his daughters and their future education, drawing significant support from friends, family and strangers touched by the sudden loss.
His family and friends gathered in Manhattan for his funeral service on September 6.
At the service, Carly delivered an emotional tribute to her husband, remembering the life they had built together and the devastating reality of raising their children without him.
A SUDDEN LOSS THAT LEFT A FAMILY HEARTBROKEN
Korwin’s death came without warning during what had been intended to be a family getaway.
For his wife and daughters, the vacation became the last time they would ever spend with him before his sudden death.
Friends remembered a man whose life extended far beyond athletic accomplishments. His career in wellness reflected the same commitment to health and activity that had defined his years as a competitive triathlete.
But for those closest to him, his most important legacy was not a race, championship or professional achievement.
It was the family he loved.
Spencer Korwin’s life ended at 38, leaving behind his wife, two daughters and a community mourning a husband, father, athlete and friend whose presence had touched many lives.
His daughters will grow up carrying the memories of the father who was at the center of their world — and the legacy he left through the people who loved him.
