BRITISH DIVER ANDREW RICE, 43, FOUND DEAD 270 FEET UNDERWATER IN FRENCH CAVE AFTER TWO-DAY SEARCH

A British cave diver has been found dead nearly 300 feet underwater in France after a major two-day search operation involving specialist rescue teams.

Andrew Rice, 43, from Stroud, Gloucestershire, disappeared during a dive at the Gouffre de Saint-Sauveur, a submerged cave system near Calès in southwestern France.

He entered the cave at around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, September 18, alongside other experienced divers.

When he failed to return several hours later, a large-scale rescue operation was launched.

His body was eventually located on Sunday, September 20, at a depth of approximately 88 metres (289 feet) inside the cave system.

ANDREW FAILED TO RESURFACE AFTER ENTERING THE CAVE

Rice was reportedly part of a group of experienced British cave divers exploring the Saint-Sauveur system.

He entered the underwater network at around 3:30 p.m. on September 18.

Two of the divers who went into the narrow network with him later returned safely to the group.

But Rice did not emerge.

By approximately 8 p.m., concerns had grown and rescuers were alerted.

French authorities responded with a major underground search involving specialist cave divers, firefighters, gendarmes and members of the French cave-rescue organisation Spéléo Secours Français.

The Lot prefecture activated the country’s emergency response arrangements for subterranean rescue operations.

RESCUERS HOPED HE HAD REACHED AN AIR CHAMBER

During the early stages of the operation, rescuers still hoped Rice might have survived by reaching one of the air-filled chambers inside the cave.

One such chamber was located at roughly 260 feet below the surface.

According to reports, rescuers searched the chamber but found no sign of him.

Teams continued pushing deeper into the flooded passages as the search entered its second day.

Eventually, specialist divers located Rice’s body deep inside the cave on September 20.

BODY FOUND NEARLY 300 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE

Rice was found at approximately 88 metres (289 feet) below the surface.

The difficult environment made the recovery operation extremely challenging.

French prosecutor Clara Ribeiro confirmed that the body could not immediately be brought back to the surface because of the configuration of the cave.

Authorities said another recovery attempt would be made using specialist equipment.

Reports from French and British media said Rice was found caught in a guideline, sometimes known among cave divers as an “Ariadne’s thread.”

These lines are used by cave divers to maintain a route back through complex underwater passages.

However, being found entangled in the line has not been officially established as the cause of death.

An investigation has been opened to determine exactly what happened.

MURKY WATER MADE THE RECOVERY EVEN HARDER

The underwater environment became increasingly difficult for rescuers.

Reports said disturbed clay and sediment reduced visibility inside the cave, making it harder for divers to navigate and safely reach the body.

The depth, narrow passages and complex configuration of the cave also created additional technical challenges.

Specialist teams therefore had to balance the recovery effort with the safety of the rescuers themselves.

RICE WAS AN EXPERIENCED DIVER

Friends and fellow divers described Rice as an experienced member of the diving community.

He had been documenting his diving activities on social media during his trip to France.

In a Facebook post on September 9, Rice wrote about returning to France to continue unfinished diving projects.

He also said he hoped to complete his 1,000th dive during the trip.

In his final post, published shortly before the fatal dive, Rice described a final preparation dive and said he was feeling confident and ready for the major dive.

His goal was to complete dive number 1,000.

FRIENDS PAY TRIBUTE

News of Rice’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow divers and friends.

One friend described being devastated by the news and said Rice would never be forgotten.

Another described the incident as a rare but devastating event and sent thoughts to Rice’s family and diving companions.

The tributes have highlighted the close-knit nature of the specialist cave-diving community, where experienced divers often undertake technically demanding explorations in challenging underwater environments.

INVESTIGATION INTO HIS DEATH CONTINUES

French authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rice’s death.

At this stage, his precise cause of death has not been established publicly.

Authorities will examine the circumstances of the dive, his equipment, the underwater environment and what happened in the moments before he was found.

The fact that Rice was discovered entangled in a guideline is part of reports about the recovery scene, but it should not be treated as a confirmed medical or official cause of death.
