THE VOICE UK UNVEILS SHOCK ‘LOCKDOWN’ TWIST AFTER TOM JONES EXIT — FANS FACE A MAJOR CHANGE

The Voice UK is heading into a major new era — and viewers will face a dramatic change to the audition format when the show returns with its next series.

Following the shock departure of legendary coach Sir Tom Jones, ITV is also introducing a new feature known as the “Lockdown Button”, which could completely change what happens when a contestant receives a four-chair turn.

The twist is part of a wider overhaul of the long-running singing competition as ITV prepares for Series 15 in 2027.

THE NEW “LOCKDOWN” BUTTON

Traditionally, when all four coaches turn their chairs for a contestant during the Blind Auditions, the singer becomes the center of a battle between the coaches.

Each coach gets the opportunity to pitch for the performer before the contestant ultimately decides which team to join.

That process is now set to change.

Under the reported Lockdown Button format, when a singer receives a four-chair turn, a coach can press the new button to automatically secure the contestant for their team.

That means the performer could lose the traditional opportunity to choose between competing coaches.

The new feature replaces the Rewind Button, which was introduced during the current series but will not return for the next run.

A HUGE SHAKE-UP BEHIND THE RED CHAIRS

The format change comes alongside one of the biggest personnel shake-ups in the show’s recent history.

ITV has confirmed that Cheryl and rapper Aitch will make their coaching debuts for Series 15.

They will join returning coach Kelly Rowland and long-standing coach will.i.am.

Meanwhile, Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will take over hosting duties.

Several familiar faces are leaving the programme.

Sir Tom Jones, Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones and Emma Willis will not return in their previous regular roles.

The next series is scheduled to air in 2027.

 TOM JONES SAYS HE DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE

The shake-up has been particularly controversial because of Tom Jones’ account of his departure.

The 86-year-old music legend said he did not choose to leave The Voice UK and claimed that ITV made the decision.

Jones said he was told the reason involved financial difficulties connected with insurance.

He also said ITV later described the change as part of an effort to refresh the coaching line-up.

ITV has not publicly confirmed Jones’ account of the insurance issue.

An ITV spokesperson said the broadcaster had loved working with Jones and that although he would no longer be a full-time coach on Series 15, discussions about possible involvement with the next series were continuing.

 CHERYL TAKES OVER TOM’S CHAIR

One of the biggest changes will be the arrival of Cheryl, who returns to a major television talent-show role after years away from the coaching panel.

She will take one of the famous red chairs alongside Aitch, Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.

For viewers accustomed to seeing Tom Jones in the lineup, the change marks the end of a significant chapter.

Jones was part of The Voice UK from its launch in 2012, although he missed one season before returning.

ITV described him as “irreplaceable” while thanking him for his years on the programme and the memorable moments he brought to contestants and viewers.

 THE CONTESTANT WILL HAVE LESS CONTROL

The new Lockdown system could prove particularly significant for contestants.

Under the traditional format, a four-chair turn created a dramatic showdown in which coaches tried to persuade the singer to choose them.

The contestant ultimately had the final say.

With the new system, however, the reported Lockdown Button gives coaches the ability to secure an act immediately once all four chairs have turned.

That could make the Blind Auditions faster and more unpredictable — while removing one of the show’s familiar moments in which contestants weigh up their options before making a personal choice.

 A NEW ERA FOR THE VOICE UK

The changes mean that almost every major part of The Voice UK will look different when Series 15 arrives.

There will be new hosts.

There will be new coaches.

There will be a new audition twist.

And one of the show’s longest-serving stars, Tom Jones, will no longer occupy a full-time coaching chair.

ITV says the new lineup is designed to bring fresh energy to the programme, while Jones’ future involvement has not been completely ruled out.

For fans, however, the biggest question may be what the new Lockdown Button means for the contestants themselves.

The red chairs are staying.

But the rules behind them are about to change.
