BOY, 5, DIES AFTER BEING BURIED UNDER MUD WHILE PLAYING IN A HOLE IN BRAZIL

A five-year-old boy has died after being buried when wet earth collapsed while he was playing inside a deep hole in southern Brazil.

Gael Bernardo Pereira Gomes was playing with another child in a hole measuring around two metres deep in the rural area of Serra dos Dourados, a district of Umuarama in Paraná, on Saturday, September 19.

The hole had been prepared for the construction of a water reservoir.

According to local reports, the ground had become unstable after heavy rain. The soil suddenly gave way, sending earth down into the hole where the children were playing.

The other child managed to escape, but Gael became trapped beneath the earth.

FIREFIGHTERS DUG THROUGH THE EARTH BY HAND

Emergency services were called as rescuers rushed to the scene.

Firefighters had to dig manually because using heavy machinery could have caused further movement of the unstable ground.

The rescue operation lasted around 40 minutes before Gael could be brought out. According to reports, he was unconscious and in cardiac arrest when rescuers reached him.

Medical teams immediately began resuscitation efforts, but despite their attempts, the child could not be saved.

Gael was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire service Sergeant Douglas Arcanjo Dias described the rescue as an especially difficult operation because the victim was a young child.

“The whole team gave everything they could,” Dias said, according to The Irish Sun.

He added that rescuers continued working despite physical exhaustion and did not stop until every possible effort had been made.

“When we cannot save them, it weighs on us,” he said.

GAEL WAS A STUDENT AT A LOCAL SCHOOL

Gael was a student at Serra dos Dourados Municipal School.

Following his death, the Umuarama Municipal Education Department confirmed his identity and issued a message of mourning for the five-year-old.

The department said the school community was standing alongside Gael’s family during their loss and wished them strength and comfort.

“May Gael’s good memories remain in the hearts of everyone who had the opportunity to live with him,” the statement said.

His wake and burial were held on Sunday, September 20.

What began as an ordinary moment of childhood play ended in a devastating accident.

Local reports said the children had been playing inside the excavation when the saturated ground suddenly collapsed.

The incident occurred in a rural area where a reservoir was being constructed, and the recent rain had left the soil particularly unstable.

The circumstances surrounding the collapse have highlighted the dangers posed by unstable excavations, particularly when children are able to enter them.

For Gael’s family and the local school community, the tragedy has left behind an immeasurable loss.

He was only five years old.
