TASIA FORTUNE WAS ALREADY DEAD BEFORE HER BODY WAS FOUND HANGING FROM A TREE, POLICE SAY

A 29-year-old mother of four was already dead when her body was allegedly placed in a tree behind an abandoned home in Mississippi, according to investigators.

The death of Tasia Fortune has taken a disturbing new turn after police revealed that the scene where she was found hanging had been staged.

Fortune’s body was discovered on August 3, 2026, behind a vacant home in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in Jackson, Mississippi.

The discovery immediately drew widespread attention because the scene appeared to resemble a lynching — a particularly painful association in a state with a long history of racial violence.

But investigators now say Fortune did not die from the hanging.

At a preliminary hearing on September 25, Jackson Police Department Detective Samuel Dukes testified that the medical examiner had determined the hanging was staged. Investigators believe Fortune had already been dead for approximately two to three days before her body was found.

POLICE SAY SHE WAS KILLED SOMEWHERE ELSE

Authorities have not publicly disclosed Fortune’s exact cause of death.

However, her death has been officially classified as a homicide, and investigators believe she was killed at another location before her body was moved.

Detective Dukes told the court that investigators believe the killing stemmed from a dispute involving drugs.

He also said Fortune fought hard before she was killed.

Authorities have not explained why her body was subsequently placed in a hanging position, and police have not publicly disclosed all of the evidence supporting their theory.

The circumstances surrounding the final moments of Fortune’s life therefore remain under investigation.

THREE MEN NOW FACE MURDER CHARGES

The investigation has so far led to murder charges against three men.

Jarques Ratliff, 51, was arrested on September 11 and charged with murder.

Police later arrested Earnest Lloyd Jr., 25, on a murder charge.

Then, on September 25, Eric Clark, 45, surrendered to authorities after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was also charged with murder and is scheduled to appear in court on September 28.

Police have not publicly alleged that all three men played the same role in Fortune’s death.

Investigators say they are continuing to determine who else may have been involved.

Ratliff has pleaded not guilty. His attorney, Toney Baldwin, said outside court that his client maintains he was not involved in the killing. Ratliff’s family has also insisted that he is innocent.

HER MOTHER STILL WANTS ANSWERS

Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, has been left struggling to understand what happened to her daughter.

Speaking after Friday’s hearing, Spivey said she had already believed that Tasia was dead before her body was found hanging.

But the new information has not brought complete closure.

She told reporters that she now has “more questions” than before and wants to know exactly what happened to her daughter.

Spivey has also rejected an allegation mentioned by investigators that Fortune had stolen drugs.

She acknowledged that her daughter had struggled with addiction but said that, regardless of her circumstances, she did not deserve to die.

A CASE THAT SPARKED FEARS OF A LYNCHING

When Fortune’s body was discovered hanging from a tree, the circumstances immediately triggered fears that she had been the victim of a modern-day lynching.

Mississippi’s history made the discovery particularly disturbing.

However, investigators now say the appearance of the scene was misleading.

According to police testimony, Fortune had already been killed before her body was placed in the tree.

Authorities have emphasized that they are treating the case as a homicide, but they have not said precisely how she died or why investigators believe the hanging scene was created.

FOUR CHILDREN LEFT BEHIND

Fortune was a mother of four sons.

Following her death, her children have been placed with relatives and other loved ones. Two of the boys are reportedly being adopted.

Her family is now waiting for investigators to establish what happened during the days before Fortune’s body was discovered.

Police say as many as 15 witnesses have been interviewed as part of the investigation.

The case remains active, with prosecutors and investigators continuing to examine the evidence surrounding Fortune’s death and the alleged staging of the scene.

For Spivey, the questions are deeply personal.

She said she hoped the latest developments would bring some relief, but she is still waiting for the answers that could explain how her daughter died — and who was responsible.
