BODY FOUND IN WATER AS SEARCH FOR MISSING 18-YEAR-OLD GEORGE ENTERS HEARTBREAKING NEW PHASE

NEWPORT, WALES — A body has been recovered from coastal waters near Newport as the search for an 18-year-old man named George, who disappeared more than a week ago, reaches a heartbreaking turn.

George, who is from Portishead in Somerset, was last seen at around 8:20 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, in the Woodlands Road area of Portishead.

For 10 days, his disappearance prompted a major search involving police officers, coastguard teams, the RNLI and other emergency services.

Now, Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed that a body was recovered from a coastal location near Newport on Sunday morning, September 27.

Police said the clothing found on the body matched what George had been wearing when he was last seen.

However, a formal identification has not yet been completed.

FAMILY INFORMED OF THE DISCOVERY

Officers have informed George’s family about the discovery and are continuing to provide them with support through a specially trained officer.

The force said the family had been touched by the widespread support they received during the search but are now asking for privacy as they deal with the latest development.

The discovery came after days of repeated appeals for information and searches around the coastline.

Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Andy Barry previously acknowledged the strength of George’s family during the difficult search.

“I would like to recognise the strength and resilience of George’s family during this time,” he said, adding that police were continuing to keep them updated through a specialist liaison officer.

A LARGE-SCALE SEARCH

George’s disappearance triggered an extensive operation involving several emergency services.

Police, coastguard teams and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) were among those involved in efforts to locate him.

The search extended beyond Portishead, with authorities ultimately recovering the body from water near Newport in South Wales.

Police have thanked members of the public who provided information and shared appeals during the search, as well as emergency teams involved in the operation.

The case had generated repeated public appeals because of the uncertainty surrounding George’s whereabouts.

His last confirmed sighting was on the evening of September 17.

No further confirmed sightings had been publicly reported before the discovery.

POLICE SAY THE DEATH IS NOT BEING TREATED AS SUSPICIOUS

Despite the tragic discovery, police have said that the death is not currently being treated as suspicious.

The case will now be referred to the coroner, who will oversee the next stage of the investigation.
