Seven months have passed since Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson-area home.

But despite a massive investigation involving the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI, investigators still have not publicly identified a suspect — and Nancy has not been found.

The case remains active.

And authorities are still analyzing evidence that could ultimately reveal what happened to the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie.

THE MORNING EVERYTHING CHANGED

Nancy was reported missing on February 1, 2026, after she failed to show up to watch a church service with friends.

Investigators believe she was taken from her home in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson during the early morning hours.

Doorbell-camera footage later released by authorities appeared to show a masked individual near Nancy’s home.

The footage became one of the most important publicly known pieces of evidence in a case that quickly drew national attention.

But months later, investigators still have not publicly named the person shown in the footage.

THEN CAME THE NOTES

In July, authorities released two handwritten notes that were apparently connected to the disappearance.

The decision was unusual — and deliberate.

Investigators hoped someone might recognize the handwriting, wording or other details and provide information that could help identify whoever was responsible.

One of the notes contained a disturbing claim about Nancy’s fate.

Authorities, however, have not publicly confirmed that the claims in the notes are true.

Instead, investigators have continued treating the disappearance as an active investigation.

The release generated additional tips, but it did not immediately produce a publicly announced suspect.

THE DNA CLUE THAT DIDN’T ANSWER THE QUESTION

Investigators have also been working through forensic evidence.

A hair sample recovered at Nancy’s home underwent testing, but the result was inconclusive and did not point investigators toward a suspect.

The sheriff’s department now says DNA and video analysis remain ongoing, with evidence being examined by laboratories around the country.

Technology is also playing an increasingly important role as investigators continue reviewing the enormous amount of information generated by the case.

WHY HAVE POLICE GONE SO QUIET?

For months, there have been few public updates.

That silence has fueled speculation that investigators may have reached a dead end.

But retired FBI agent Scott Augenbaum says that conclusion would be premature.

He emphasized that a case does not become “cold” simply because investigators stop discussing it publicly.

Law enforcement may deliberately keep information private while evidence is being analyzed or while investigators attempt to build a case against a person they may already be watching.

In other words, the lack of public announcements does not necessarily mean the investigation has stopped.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has also said the investigation remains active and that it continues working closely with the FBI.

SEVEN MONTHS — AND STILL NO ANSWER

Nancy’s disappearance has now entered its eighth month.

There is still no publicly identified suspect.

There is still no confirmed location for Nancy.

And authorities have not publicly established exactly what happened inside or around her home during the hours when she disappeared.

For Savannah Guthrie and her family, the uncertainty continues.

For investigators, the case remains open.

And somewhere inside the evidence — the video, the DNA, the digital records, the tips or perhaps a detail that someone has not yet reported — authorities are still looking for the piece that could finally explain where Nancy went.

The sheriff’s department says tips are continuing to come in and investigators are reviewing them.

The combined reward for information that could help solve the case is currently $1.2 million.
