JASON LANDRY’S REMAINS FOUND SIX YEARS AFTER HE VANISHED ON HIS WAY HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

For nearly six years, the family of Jason Landry lived with one of the most painful questions imaginable: What happened to their son?

Now, they finally know where he is — but many of the questions surrounding his disappearance remain unanswered.

Human remains discovered in rural Caldwell County, Texas, have been positively identified as those of the 21-year-old Texas State University student, who disappeared on December 13, 2020 while driving home for Christmas.

The identification was confirmed through DNA analysis by the Texas Attorney General’s Office Cold Case Unit on September 23, 2026.

But investigators still do not know exactly how Jason died.

THE NIGHT JASON DISAPPEARED

Jason was driving from San Marcos to his family’s home in Missouri City for the Christmas holidays when his journey suddenly ended.

His Nissan Altima was found abandoned and badly damaged on Salt Flat Road near Luling, in Caldwell County.

Jason himself was nowhere to be found.

Investigators discovered several of his personal belongings in and around the vehicle, including his cellphone, wallet and clothing.

The discovery immediately triggered a major search for the young college student.

Authorities believed Jason had likely been involved in a crash and may have managed to get out of the vehicle before disappearing.

But exactly what happened after he left the car remained a mystery.

A MYSTERY THAT LASTED NEARLY SIX YEARS

The search for Jason continued for years.

His family, friends, volunteers and law enforcement agencies repeatedly searched the surrounding area for clues.

According to authorities, around 30 search operations were conducted during the six years after his disappearance.

A $20,000 reward was also offered for information that could help locate him.

Yet despite the extensive effort, Jason could not be found.

His family continued waiting for answers while the case remained unresolved.

THE DISCOVERY OF HUMAN REMAINS

Then, on September 8, 2026, a local resident in Caldwell County made a discovery that would finally change the case.

While cutting his grass, the resident reportedly noticed something unusual.

Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a human skull.

Authorities were called, and investigators began examining the remains.

The location was significant.

The remains were found in the same general area where Jason had disappeared — approximately five miles from the original crash site, according to the Texas Attorney General’s Cold Case Unit.

The discovery raised immediate hopes that investigators might finally be able to determine what happened to Jason.

DNA CONFIRMS THE IDENTITY

Forensic experts at the Center for Human Identification at UNT Health Fort Worth analyzed the remains.

DNA testing eventually provided the answer the Landry family had been waiting nearly six years to hear.

The remains belonged to Jason Landry.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office announced the identification on September 23.

After years of uncertainty, Jason had finally been found.

But the discovery did not solve every part of the mystery.

HOW DID JASON DIE?

Investigators say the recovered skeletal remains do not provide additional insight into the cause or manner of death.

That means authorities have not established exactly what killed Jason or whether his death resulted directly from the 2020 crash, exposure, an accident after leaving the vehicle, or another circumstance.

Authorities have also said they have found no indication of foul play.

The investigation therefore remains open as officials continue examining the evidence surrounding Jason’s disappearance and death.

THE SEARCH AREA HAD BEEN LOOKED AT BEFORE

One of the most striking aspects of the discovery is how close the remains were to the area where Jason’s vehicle was originally found.

Yet the location had somehow remained outside the areas covered by previous searches.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office said the remains were discovered outside the zone established for earlier search operations.

That detail has added another painful layer to a case that had already endured years of uncertainty.

According to local reporting, investigators had previously searched the area extensively and followed numerous leads.

But none had led them to Jason.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS RAISED QUESTIONS

The original investigation also produced several unusual details.

Near the crash site, investigators found Jason’s clothing and other belongings.

A backpack located approximately 900 feet from the crash site contained his wallet, laptop and gaming equipment.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office has also clarified previous reports about the contents of the backpack, saying it contained a small amount of marijuana — not a large quantity of narcotics as some reports had suggested.

Investigators also examined the vehicle for DNA and blood evidence.

According to the sheriff’s office, no evidence of blood was found inside the car.

Officials also said they found no evidence that Jason had been heading to meet someone in the Luling area.

A FAMILY’S SIX-YEAR WAIT

For the Landry family, the confirmation brings something they have not had since December 2020: certainty about where Jason is.

But it also brings a devastating reality.

Their son, brother and friend will not be coming home.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton described the development as a critical moment in a case that had weighed heavily on the family for nearly six years.

He said the Landry family had suffered an “unimaginable tragedy” and that his Cold Case Unit would continue working to resolve the case.

THE CASE IS NOT OVER

The discovery of Jason’s remains closes one chapter of the mystery — but not all of it.

Investigators still have to determine what happened between the moment Jason’s car crashed and the discovery of his remains nearly six years later.

At this stage, officials have not announced evidence of a homicide.

They have also not established a definitive cause or manner of death.

For Jason’s family, however, the uncertainty has changed.

For almost six years, they searched for a missing young man.

Now they know that the remains found in Caldwell County belong to him.

What remains is the question that has haunted the case from the beginning:
