HEARTBREAK AS BODY OF MISSING WESTMEATH MAN KYLE GEOGHEGAN RECOVERED FROM LOUGH ENNELL AFTER 10-DAY SEARCH
A Westmeath man in his 20s has been found dead in a lake after a huge multi-agency search operation lasting around 10 days.
The body of Kyle Geoghegan was recovered from Lough Ennell in County Westmeath on Tuesday morning, bringing a tragic end to the search for the missing man.
Gardaí, specialist search teams and scores of volunteers had spent days searching the lake and surrounding areas after Kyle was reported missing.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from local organisations and members of the community.
BODY RECOVERED FROM LOUGH ENNELL
Kyle’s body was recovered from Lough Ennell following an extensive operation involving the Garda Water Unit, local sub-aqua teams, Civil Defence, the Garda Dog Unit and volunteers.
The search had continued for approximately 10 days before his body was located.
RTÉ reported that the recovery involved Garda divers, local fishermen and Mallow Search and Rescue from County Cork.
The search was then stood down.
Kyle’s remains were taken to Regional Hospital Mullingar, where a post-mortem examination is due to take place.
The coroner has also been notified.
At this stage, authorities have not publicly confirmed the circumstances surrounding Kyle’s death.
HIS BOAT WAS FOUND ABANDONED
The search began after Kyle’s 17-foot fishing boat was discovered in Lough Ennell.
According to reports, the boat was found near Tudenham Park on the lake after Kyle had gone missing.
Its discovery prompted a major search operation involving emergency services, specialist diving teams and local people determined to help find him.
The conditions made the search particularly difficult.
Search coordinator Frankie Wright previously said visibility beneath the water was extremely poor, making specialist equipment such as sonar, underwater drones and aerial drones especially important.
HUNDREDS JOINED THE SEARCH
As the days passed, the search grew into a major community effort.
The Garda Water Unit was joined by local sub-aqua clubs, Civil Defence, the Garda Dog Unit and, later, the Defence Forces.
Volunteers from across Ireland travelled to Westmeath to assist.
People brought boats, kayaks, sonar equipment and underwater drones to help search the lake.
By the seventh day of the operation, hundreds of people were reported to be assisting with the search.
Search and rescue volunteers from as far away as County Cork also travelled to the area.
The Westmeath Examiner reported that volunteers had organised watercraft and specialist sonar and drone equipment as the effort continued.
TRIBUTES POUR IN
News of Kyle’s death has left his family, friends and the wider community heartbroken.
Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery, which was involved in the search effort, described the conclusion as “tragic and heartbreaking.”
The organisation extended its condolences to Kyle’s family and friends and paid tribute to the young man’s memory.
Castletown Geoghegan Hurling also expressed its sympathy to Kyle’s loved ones.
The club praised the extraordinary community effort during the search, saying the support shown by people who came forward reflected the strength of the local community.
St Malachy’s GFC also shared its condolences with Kyle’s family.
The club highlighted the huge number of people who had given their time to help during the search.
A community of Dublin Gaelic Fans described the news as “absolutely heartbreaking”, sending their thoughts to Kyle’s family, friends and the wider community.
A COMMUNITY UNITED IN HOPE
For more than a week, people across the region had continued to hope that Kyle would be found.
The operation brought together professional emergency responders, specialist divers, search-and-rescue groups and ordinary members of the public.
Their efforts continued despite difficult conditions in the lake and the challenges involved in searching such a large body of water.
The discovery of Kyle’s body has now brought an end to the search, but many questions remain unanswered.
A post-mortem examination is expected to provide further information about the circumstances of his death.
For now, Kyle’s family and friends are left to mourn a young man whose disappearance brought an entire community together.
The Gardaí have thanked the State agencies, local organisations and people from across Ireland who travelled to Westmeath and assisted in the search.
As tributes continue to be shared, the focus now turns to supporting Kyle’s loved ones through the devastating days ahead.
