Emergency Motion Reveals Christa Pike Survived Two Lethal Injection Doses

A late-night emergency court filing revealed the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute death row inmate Christa Pike: she remained alive after receiving two doses of the lethal-injection drug pentobarbital.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on September 30 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

Instead, the execution became a medical emergency.

According to the emergency motion filed by Pike’s attorneys during the procedure, correctional officials had administered two doses of the execution drug, but Pike still had a heartbeat, had not lost consciousness and could reportedly be heard audibly snoring.

Lawyers Asked the Court to Stop the Procedure

Pike’s legal team filed an emergency motion seeking to halt the execution after learning that the two doses had failed to cause her death.

The filing described an unprecedented situation in which the state had already administered the drugs intended to kill Pike, yet she remained alive.

The attorneys argued that continuing the procedure could expose Pike to additional suffering and raised constitutional concerns about the manner in which the execution was being carried out.

The emergency filing came after the U.S. Supreme Court had allowed Tennessee to proceed with the execution earlier that evening.

The Supreme Court’s docket shows that Pike’s application for a stay of execution and her petition for review were denied on September 29.

Pike Remained Alive After Two Doses

Witnesses reported that Pike complained of pain in her arm during the procedure.

After the second dose, she continued breathing and making audible sounds. The execution chamber curtain was eventually closed, but witnesses could still hear signs that Pike remained alive.

Her attorneys later said she was transported by ambulance to an off-site hospital.

By October 1, her lawyers said Pike was in critical condition and receiving lifesaving medical care. Attorney Randy Spivey said the legal team did not yet know her prognosis.

What Went Wrong Remains Unclear

One of the biggest unanswered questions is why two doses of pentobarbital did not result in Pike’s death.

Her attorneys have raised concerns about the difficulty of establishing intravenous access and the possibility that the medication did not enter her bloodstream as intended. Those claims remain part of the legal team’s account and have not been established as the official cause of the failed execution.

The Tennessee Department of Correction has maintained that officials followed every step of the state’s established execution protocol. The department has not publicly provided a definitive explanation for why the procedure failed.

The lack of an immediate explanation has intensified scrutiny of Tennessee’s execution procedures.

Tennessee Suspends Remaining Executions

Pike’s failed execution was the second unsuccessful execution attempt in Tennessee this year.

In May, officials abandoned an execution attempt involving Tony Carruthers after they were unable to establish a suitable IV line.

Following Pike’s case, Gov. Bill Lee announced that Tennessee would suspend its remaining scheduled executions for 2026 and ordered a comprehensive third-party review of what happened.

The review is expected to examine the execution process and determine why the procedure did not result in Pike’s death.

Her Death Sentence Has Not Been Overturned

The failed execution does not overturn Pike’s conviction or death sentence.

Pike remains under a death sentence for Slemmer’s 1995 murder. What happens next, however, remains uncertain.

Her immediate medical condition is now another central issue. Her attorneys have said she was receiving lifesaving treatment, while the state has begun reviewing the execution attempt.

The extraordinary episode has left Tennessee facing questions that go beyond a single failed execution: Why did two doses of the lethal-injection drug fail, what happened medically to Pike during the procedure, and what will happen to her death sentence now?

For the moment, those questions remain unanswered.
