REUBEN OWEN AND JESSICA ELLWOOD: A LOVE STORY BUILT AROUND FARM LIFE

REUBEN OWEN AND JESSICA ELLWOOD: A LOVE STORY BUILT AROUND FARM LIFE

For Reuben Owen and Jessica Ellwood, romance doesn’t look quite like it does for most young couples.

Their idea of quality time can involve sheep, machinery, muddy fields and long days working on the farm.

But that is exactly what makes their relationship so special.

The couple first met at a Young Farmers’ event in 2024, and what began with an instant connection has gradually grown into a relationship built around their shared love of farming and rural life.

Reuben has previously described meeting Jess as “the biggest stroke of luck”, while making it clear just how deeply he feels about her.

Reuben and Jess came from remarkably similar worlds.

Reuben grew up surrounded by farming in Swaledale, North Yorkshire, while Jess was raised at her family’s Brough Castle Farm in Cumbria.

For Jess, farming has been part of her life since childhood.

She previously explained that she had helped her parents on the farm from a young age and had always wanted to continue working with animals.

She now works full-time on the family farm, taking responsibility for different areas of the business and caring for livestock including cows and sheep.

That shared background helped the pair connect almost immediately.

Jess has previously said that they “just clicked” when they first met — something she believes was partly because they both understood what it was like to grow up in farming families.

Reuben admitted that it took him a little while to find the courage to ask Jess out.

Eventually, he did.

Their first date was supposed to be a simple meal together.

But Reuben had forgotten his wallet — meaning Jess ended up paying for dinner.

It is an amusing beginning to a relationship that has since become much more serious.

The pair eventually went public with their romance later in 2024, and their relationship has increasingly become part of Reuben’s television story.

“THE BIGGEST STROKE OF LUCK”

Reuben has spoken warmly about what Jess means to him.

He has described meeting her as “the biggest stroke of luck” and said that he loves her “to pieces.”

For someone whose life revolves around farming, machinery and business, having a partner who understands that lifestyle has clearly been important.

There is no need for Reuben to explain why a long day around livestock matters or why farm work can take priority over conventional plans.

Jess already understands.

She has lived it herself.

THEIR DATES AREN’T ALWAYS CONVENTIONAL

The couple’s idea of romance is often closely connected to their rural lifestyle.

Their time together can mean working with sheep, dealing with machinery or simply spending an evening together after a long day.

But they also make time for more traditional dates.

Jess has revealed that they occasionally go out for dinner and have also travelled together, including a holiday to Cyprus.

Yet some of their favourite evenings are much simpler.

When they’re not working, the couple have said they enjoy getting cosy with fish and chips or a Chinese takeaway.

For them, romance doesn’t necessarily require anything elaborate.

Sometimes it is simply being together.

FROM A TOOTHBRUSH TO A SHARED HOME

Their relationship took another major step when Reuben began spending more and more time at Jess’s family farm.

What started with occasional visits gradually became something much bigger.

Reuben explained that he used to drive down in the evening to see Jess and simply didn’t want to leave.

One night became another.

Then another.

Eventually, his toothbrush was there.

And before long, his clothes were going through the washing machine and dinner was waiting for him.

As he put it, “Now I’m all in.”

The couple have since moved in together at Brough Castle, turning their relationship into a shared home and working life.

Jess said the move simply made sense because Reuben was already there so often.

She described living together as “really special.”

FARM LIFE MEANS WORKING SIDE BY SIDE

Their relationship is also unusual because both understand the demands of running a farm.

Jess works alongside her family with livestock, while Reuben runs his own machinery business and continues his farming work.

That means their days aren’t necessarily built around fixed working hours.

There are animals that need looking after.

Machinery that needs attention.

Fences and pens that need repairing.

And during lambing season, plans can change in an instant.

Instead of becoming a source of tension, their shared understanding of rural life gives them something important in common.

They know what the other person is dealing with.

THEIR FIRST “PET” TOGETHER

Their shared home has even gained a very special new member.

The couple took in a young lamb named Fluff after the lamb suffered a broken leg when she was born.

Jess explained that Fluff’s mother accidentally stepped on her leg.

The pair decided to care for her themselves, with the lamb even spending time inside the house and sleeping on a blanket.

Reuben joked that Fluff was their first pet — although the way they cared for her made her feel more like their child.

It is another glimpse into the kind of life the couple are building together.

THEY HAVE NO DESIRE TO LEAVE THE COUNTRYSIDE

While many young couples dream of moving to a city, Reuben and Jess appear perfectly happy where they are.

Reuben has previously said that he has no desire to trade the countryside for city life.

He grew up there, works there and has built his career around it.

When asked about the possibility of moving to London, he simply ruled it out.

For Reuben, being able to work in the countryside while spending time with Jess is exactly where he wants to be.

TWO PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER

Perhaps the strongest part of Reuben and Jess’s relationship is how naturally their lives fit together.

They don’t have to choose between farming and their relationship.

For them, the two have become part of the same life.

They can spend the morning working with animals, the afternoon dealing with machinery and the evening sharing takeaway food at home.

There is something quietly romantic about that.

Their relationship isn’t built around grand gestures.

It is built around understanding.

They know the early mornings.

They know the muddy boots.

They know the long working days.

And they understand why the farm sometimes has to come first.

A LOVE STORY STILL GROWING

Reuben and Jess are still young, but their relationship has already moved through several important stages — from meeting at a Young Farmers’ event to going public, travelling together and eventually creating a shared home.

Their story has also become a familiar part of Reuben’s life on television, giving viewers a glimpse into a side of the young farmer that exists beyond machinery and livestock.

And perhaps that is why their relationship has resonated with so many people.

It feels genuine because it fits naturally into the lives they were already living.

For Reuben and Jessica, love doesn’t mean leaving the farm behind.

It means finding someone who is happy to stand beside you in the middle of it.

Two farmers. One shared world. And a relationship that started with a simple meeting — and has grown into a life together.
