REBUILDING AFTER DARKNESS: THE TRISTON WILSON STORY
At age 19, Houston native Triston Wilson survived a catastrophic gunshot wound to the head following a suicide attempt on July 14, 2023. While he survived the tragic incident, the trauma left him permanently blind and resulted in extensive facial injuries requiring continuous medical intervention. Prior to this crisis, Wilson had experienced childhood instability within the foster-care system and struggled with severe mental health issues.

Surviving the initial injury was only the beginning of a long recovery. Blindness forced Wilson to relearn basic tasks and develop new skills for independent mobility, including using a cane and accessing specialized disability services. Medical treatment remained an ongoing reality years after the incident, including continuous reconstructive follow-ups and diagnostic scans extending well into 2026.
Despite these immense physical challenges, Wilson chose to share his journey publicly. Through social media and his music—notably playing guitar—he began documenting his life with blindness and advocate for mental health awareness. His Instagram platform serves as a voice for those facing adversity, emphasizing accessibility and resilience. An interview with Inside Edition in early 2025 highlighted his progress and mental transformation.

Wilson’s story goes beyond mere physical survival. It represents the continuous process of learning to navigate a altered life, using personal trauma to inspire others, and discovering purpose beyond sudden disability.
