Gus Lamont Case: Police Reexamine Evidence and Forensic Findings as $1 Million Reward Raises Hopes for Answers
More than a year after four-year-old Gus Lamont disappeared from a remote South Australian property, investigators are still searching for answers — and a $1 million reward is now being offered for information.
Gus was last seen on September 27, 2025, at Oak Park Station, a sheep property near Yunta in South Australia’s Mid North. His disappearance initially triggered an extensive search across the surrounding outback, involving police, emergency services, specialist teams and community volunteers.
But months of searching failed to locate the child or establish exactly what happened to him. The investigation has since shifted from a missing-person search toward a suspected death investigation, with detectives focusing on the possibility that someone known to Gus was involved.
Police Say the Evidence Has Changed the Direction of the Case
In February 2026, South Australia Police declared Gus’s disappearance a major crime. Investigators said they had found no evidence supporting the theory that he had simply wandered away from the property or had been abducted by an unknown person.
Instead, Task Force Horizon began concentrating on the possibility that a person known to Gus was involved in his disappearance and suspected death.
Police have not publicly established how Gus died, where his remains may be located or who was responsible. No one has been convicted in connection with his disappearance.
Authorities have also stressed that Gus’s parents are not suspects in the investigation.
Forensic Examinations Have Yet to Provide a Breakthrough
Detectives have searched the property and examined items seized during searches in January 2026, including a vehicle, a motorcycle and electronic devices.
In a May update, police said the forensic examinations had not produced new lines of inquiry or advanced the investigation. They also cautioned that the results had not eliminated anyone from consideration.
That distinction is important. The lack of a forensic breakthrough does not establish that evidence has been concealed or that any particular person was involved. It means investigators have yet to obtain findings that resolve the central questions surrounding Gus’s disappearance.
Police have continued to assess witness information and pursue additional searches as new leads emerge.
A $1 Million Reward for Information
On September 23, 2026, South Australia Police announced a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to the conviction of the person or people responsible for Gus’s disappearance, or to the recovery of his remains.
The reward represents a renewed appeal to anyone who may have relevant information, including people who were in or around Oak Park Station when Gus vanished.
Investigators have previously reviewed information from hundreds of members of the public and carried out extensive ground and aerial searches. Despite those efforts, Gus has not been found.
The reward is intended to encourage anyone with significant information to come forward, even if they have not previously spoken to police.
The Questions That Remain
The case continues to raise several unanswered questions: What happened to Gus on September 27, 2025? Where is he now? And what evidence might help investigators establish the circumstances of his disappearance?
For his family, the passage of time has brought no definitive resolution. For detectives, the challenge is to turn witness accounts, forensic examinations and other information into evidence that can establish what happened.
Police have urged anyone with relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers.
More than a year after Gus disappeared, investigators are still seeking the evidence needed to resolve the case. The $1 million reward is a renewed appeal for answers — but the circumstances of his disappearance remain unresolved.
