HUSBAND OF DR. HANNAH CAIN APPEARS IN CROWN COURT ON MURDER CHARGE — FIVE CHILDREN WERE INSIDE THE FAMILY HOME

A respected Norfolk GP, a family devastated by loss and a criminal case that has shocked a close-knit community. Mark Cain, 45, appeared at King’s Lynn Crown Court charged with the murder of his wife, Dr. Hannah Cain, known professionally as Dr. Hannah Terry. The hearing revealed that five children were inside the family home when emergency services were called.

The death of Dr. Hannah Cain, a 45-year-old general practitioner from Dersingham, Norfolk, has prompted an outpouring of grief from her family, colleagues, patients and members of the local community.

Hannah was found unresponsive at her home in Fern Hill during the early hours of Sunday, October 4, 2026. Her husband, Mark Cain, was subsequently charged with her murder.

On Thursday, October 8, Mark appeared at King’s Lynn Crown Court by video link from custody. The brief hearing marked another stage in the legal proceedings, as details about the circumstances surrounding Hannah’s death were brought before the court.

The case has attracted widespread attention because of Hannah’s work as a doctor, her role as a mother of three and the fact that children were staying at the family home on the night of the incident.

However, the criminal proceedings remain at an early stage. Mark Cain has been charged but has not been convicted, and the allegations against him have yet to be determined at trial.

Emergency services were called to the family’s address in Dersingham shortly after 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, October 4.

At an earlier hearing at Norwich Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Jackie Hanlon told the court that the East of England Ambulance Service contacted Norfolk Police at approximately 2:25 a.m. after Hannah was found in an upstairs bedroom.

She was described in court as being unconscious and not breathing. Paramedics attended, but Hannah died.

Police began investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, and her husband was arrested. Mark Cain, also 45, was subsequently charged with murder.

The family home is in Dersingham, a village close to the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. The location has attracted additional public attention because Hannah was reportedly part of a pool of doctors available to provide medical care to members of the Royal Family when they stayed at Sandringham.

The investigation has since moved into the court process, where prosecutors have outlined some of the evidence available at this stage.

One of the most significant details disclosed during the initial proceedings concerned the findings of Hannah’s post-mortem examination.

At Norwich Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Jackie Hanlon told the hearing that the examination had identified a blunt-force injury to the right side of Hannah’s head. She also described another injury that could be suggestive of compression of the neck.

At the Crown Court hearing on October 8, prosecutor Steven Ball again outlined the findings, referring to blunt-force injuries to the head and neck injuries consistent with compression.

These findings form part of the evidence being considered in the investigation. They have not, on their own, established every detail of what happened inside the house, and the complete circumstances surrounding Hannah’s death remain matters for the criminal proceedings.

The distinction is important. Information presented by the prosecution at a hearing describes the case being brought against the defendant; it does not replace the full examination of evidence that takes place through the legal process.

FIVE CHILDREN WERE INSIDE THE HOUSE

The court also heard that five children were present at the property during the incident.

Prosecutors said Hannah and Mark’s three children, aged eight, 11 and 13, were upstairs in the house. Two additional children, aged eight and 10, were also staying at the property for a sleepover.

The detail has added another deeply distressing dimension to the case. The children were young, and the events have left a family facing profound loss while court proceedings continue.

Authorities have not publicly established every detail of what the children witnessed or knew. It would therefore be inappropriate to speculate about their experiences.

What has been confirmed in court is that the children were present at the property when emergency services were called.

For Hannah’s family, the immediate priority is now to grieve and support those affected by her death while the criminal justice process moves forward.

MARK CAIN’S APPEARANCE AT KING’S LYNN CROWN COURT

Mark Cain appeared before King’s Lynn Crown Court by video link from custody on Thursday, October 8.

At the beginning of the hearing, he confirmed his name. He was not asked to enter a plea, and no application for bail was made.

Judge Mr Justice Lickley remanded him in custody until a plea hearing provisionally scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Norwich Crown Court.

A provisional trial date had not been set in the reports published following the hearing.

The appearance followed Mark’s earlier hearing at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 7. At that hearing, he confirmed his name, address and date of birth and was also not asked to enter a plea.

The case was then sent to the Crown Court, where more serious criminal charges are dealt with.

As the legal process continues, the prosecution will need to present its case through the appropriate procedures. Mark Cain remains entitled to a fair trial, and the murder charge must not be treated as a conviction.

WHO WAS DR. HANNAH CAIN?

Although many reports have referred to her as Dr. Hannah Terry, her name was Hannah Cain. She was professionally known as Dr. Hannah Terry and worked as a general practitioner at Grimston Medical Centre.

According to information published by her medical aesthetics business, Norfolk Sky Aesthetics, she had been a qualified doctor for more than 15 years and had worked as a GP for eight years.

Alongside her work in general practice, she ran the aesthetics business, combining her medical background with cosmetic treatments.

Her work also brought her into the wider medical community around Sandringham. Reports said she was part of a group of doctors available to provide medical care for members of the Royal Family when they stayed at the nearby royal residence.

The professional details have drawn attention to the range of responsibilities she held, both as a medical practitioner and as a business owner.

But for the people closest to her, Hannah was much more than her professional achievements. She was a mother, daughter, sister, aunt, daughter-in-law and friend whose death has left a painful absence in their lives.

FAMILY PAYS TRIBUTE TO “OUR BEAUTIFUL HANNAH”

On Wednesday, October 7, Hannah’s family released a tribute through Norfolk Police.

They said they were devastated by the loss of their “beautiful Hannah” and described her as “kind, generous and loving.”

The family also remembered her as a beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, daughter-in-law and friend.

They spoke with pride about the care she provided to her patients, many of whom knew her professionally as Dr. Terry.

“We are incredibly proud of the woman she was and of the great care she took of all her patients,” the family said in their statement.

The tribute offered a glimpse of the woman remembered by those who loved her: someone whose life extended beyond the headlines and whose professional work had touched people throughout the community.

The family also asked for privacy as they come to terms with their loss.

Their request reflects the difficult position faced by relatives of people involved in high-profile criminal cases, where public interest in court developments can overlap with a family’s need to grieve away from scrutiny.

TRIBUTES FROM THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY

Hannah’s death also prompted tributes from colleagues in the NHS and the local medical community.

Colleagues described her as highly intelligent, kind and generous, and said she brought warmth and positivity
