“THEY WERE AFRAID FOR THEIR LIVES” — WATERFORD FAMILY KILLED IN SUSPECTED ARSON ATTACK AS GARDAÍ INVESTIGATE PREVIOUS THREATS
Philip and Kim English and their two young sons died after a fire engulfed their family home in Waterford. Two other children remain critically ill in hospital as investigators examine whether the tragedy was linked to earlier incidents targeting the family.
WATERFORD, IRELAND — A close-knit community has been left devastated after four members of the English family died in a suspected deliberate fire at their home in Waterford City.
Philip English, his wife Kim, and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine, died after a fire broke out at their house on Birch Avenue in the Birchwood estate shortly after 5 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
Two other children from the family were taken to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, Dublin, where they were reported to be in critical condition. Gardaí have launched a murder investigation and believe the fire was started deliberately.
A FAMILY HOME ENGULFED IN FLAMES
Emergency services rushed to the scene after the fire was reported in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Firefighters, ambulance crews and Gardaí responded as the blaze spread through the two-storey property. Several casualties were removed from the house, but four family members could not be saved.
The house was subsequently declared a crime scene, with specialists from the Garda Technical Bureau carrying out a forensic examination.
Neighbours described being woken by a loud bang and hearing desperate cries as the fire took hold. Some residents reportedly tried to help those trapped inside, but the heat and smoke made the situation extremely difficult.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Waterford, where the family was known to local residents. <Cite refs={[“turn443923news18″,”turn443923news15”]}/>
PHILIP HAD REPORTED AN EARLIER INCIDENT, REPORT SAYS
Fresh questions have emerged over whether the family had been targeted before the fatal blaze.
According to The Irish Sun, Philip had given a statement to Gardaí around ten days before the fire after the family’s car was reportedly set alight. Investigators are examining whether that earlier incident was connected to the latest attack.
Friends of Kim also told the newspaper that she had expressed fears for the safety of herself and her family. Reports described previous incidents involving damage to their property and alleged intimidation.
These accounts have raised questions about whether the family had been adequately protected. However, the full circumstances of the earlier incidents and any connection to the fatal fire remain matters for investigators to establish.
GARDAÍ INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE INTIMIDATION MOTIVE
Gardaí believe the house was deliberately targeted by one or more unidentified people. The investigation is examining a possible link to drug-related intimidation, according to Irish media reports.
The Irish Times reported that investigators suspect the family may have been caught up in a dispute involving a debt allegedly owed by an associate of Philip. The newspaper also reported that the family had been hoping to move because they felt unsafe.
These remain investigative lines rather than proven findings. Gardaí have not publicly established who was responsible for the attack, and no individual should be treated as guilty without evidence and due process.
The investigation is being led by a senior investigating officer at Waterford Garda Station, with support from the Serious Crime Unit and the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
As of the latest reports cited here, no arrests had been announced.
A COMMUNITY STRUGGLES TO COME TO TERMS WITH THE LOSS
Tributes have poured in for the family, with local representatives and community organisations expressing profound sadness.
Johnville FC paid tribute to Callum, who had been part of the club for five years, beginning in its academy before progressing through its underage teams.
The club said it was incredibly difficult to comprehend that a family so well known to the community had been lost in such tragic circumstances.
Philip’s adult son from a previous relationship, John James English, also spoke of his devastation. He described the loss of his father, stepmother and younger siblings as heartbreaking and said he was struggling to find words to express his grief.
Waterford’s local representatives appealed to residents to support one another through what they described as an immensely painful time.
A fundraiser has also been launched to help the family with funeral expenses.
GARDAÍ APPEAL FOR WITNESSES
Investigators are urging anyone who may have information about the fire to come forward.
They are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who was near Birch Avenue and the surrounding Birchwood estate between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on October 13. Drivers who travelled through the area during that period are also being asked to check any dashcam footage or images that could assist the investigation.
Anyone with information can contact Waterford Garda Station on 051 305 300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
For now, a community is mourning four lives lost, while two children continue to receive critical medical care. Investigators face the difficult task of establishing exactly what happened and whether the family’s earlier concerns were connected to the fire.
The questions surrounding the tragedy remain unanswered, but the appeal from authorities is clear: anyone with information that could help the investigation should come forward.
