ASHLEY JUDD’S CHOICE TO CARE FOR THE WORLD’S CHILDREN

Ashley Judd chose not to have biological children, but she remained deeply dedicated to ensuring that children played a central role in her life. In her 2011 memoir, All That Is Bitter and Sweet, the acclaimed actress explained that this perspective took shape when she was eighteen. Rather than bringing new children into the world, she felt a profound responsibility to dedicate her time, energy, and resources to those who were already here and in need of support. “The children who are already here are really mine, too,” she wrote.

This philosophy guided her extensive global humanitarian work. In March 2016, Judd was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. The following month, she traveled to Jordan to visit programs and clinics serving women and girls, including Syrian refugees. During her visit to the Zaatari refugee camp, she met young parents whose newborn daughter had been safely delivered at a UN-supported clinic, recording their stories of resilience and displacement in her diaries.

Beyond her public advocacy for reproductive rights and women’s autonomy, Judd maintains meaningful personal connections with young people. She serves as godmother to Sofia, the daughter of her former husband, Dario Franchitti, and his second wife. Through both her international advocacy and her personal relationships, Judd built a life focused on nurturing and protecting those who needed care, proving that motherhood and maternal devotion extend far beyond biological ties.
