COURT HEARS NEW ALLEGATIONS IN CASE OF DR HANNAH CAIN — HUSBAND ACCUSED OF USING AN AXE DURING FATAL ATTACK
The husband of a much-loved Norfolk GP has appeared in court charged with her murder, as prosecutors outlined allegations about how she sustained fatal injuries while children were sleeping at the family home.
DERSINGHAM, NORFOLK, ENGLAND — New details have emerged in court proceedings following the death of Dr Hannah Cain, 45, known professionally to her patients as Dr Hannah Terry.
Her husband, Mark Cain, 45, has been charged with her murder after she was found unresponsive at the family home in Dersingham, near the Sandringham estate, in the early hours of October 4, 2026. The allegations have shocked the local community and drawn widespread attention to the case.
At a preliminary hearing at King’s Lynn Crown Court on October 8, prosecutor Steven Ball outlined the prosecution’s allegations, including that Dr Cain had been struck on the head with an axe and strangled. The court also heard that a post-mortem examination recorded blunt-force injuries to her head and neck injuries consistent with compression. These remain allegations in an active criminal case, and Mark Cain has not been convicted.
CHILDREN WERE SLEEPING AT THE FAMILY HOME
The court heard that the couple’s three children, aged 8, 11 and 13, were upstairs when the incident allegedly took place. Two other children, aged 8 and 10, were also staying at the house for a sleepover.
Emergency services attended the property after a call in the early hours of October 4. Prosecutors said Dr Cain was found unconscious and unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom.
The circumstances have added to the distress surrounding the case, particularly because several children were present in the home. Authorities have not publicly established that the children witnessed the alleged incident.
WHAT THE COURT HAS HEARD SO FAR
Earlier proceedings heard that emergency services contacted police at approximately 2:25 a.m. after a report of a suspected burglary. Mark Cain reportedly told responders that he had been injured during a confrontation with an intruder.
Prosecutors later outlined the findings of the post-mortem examination and the allegations against him. The charge followed a police investigation into Dr Cain’s death. The prosecution’s account has not yet been tested at trial, and the defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence.
A RESPECTED DOCTOR REMEMBERED BY HER FAMILY
Dr Cain worked as a GP at Grimston Medical Centre and also ran a cosmetics business. Reports have said she was part of a rota of doctors available to provide medical care to members of the Royal Family when they stayed in the nearby Sandringham area.
Following her death, her family described her as “kind, generous and loving” and paid tribute to the care she gave her patients. They asked for privacy as they grieve.
The medical centre also paid tribute to a colleague it described as deeply valued by the practice and the wider NHS community.
NEXT COURT DATE
Mark Cain was remanded in custody following the October 8 hearing. A plea hearing is provisionally scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Norwich Crown Court. No provisional trial date had been set in the reports available at the time of publication.
The case remains before the courts. Further evidence and legal arguments will be considered through the judicial process, and the allegations must not be treated as a finding of guilt.
For Dr Cain’s family, friends and patients, the proceedings follow a devastating loss. Their public tribute has focused on remembering the woman they loved and the care she gave to others.
