FORMER CHILD ACTOR WILLIAM CHAPMAN, 23, DIES AFTER TIGER ATTACK AT UK WILDLIFE PARK — FAMILY SHARES HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE
William Chapman once appeared on British television as a child. Now, his family is mourning the young man they described as “bright, warm and engaging” after he died following an incident involving a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
A former child actor has died after entering a tiger enclosure at a wildlife park in England, leaving his family devastated and prompting renewed calls for compassion as disturbing footage of the incident circulates online.
William Chapman, 23, died on Saturday, October 10, after entering the enclosure of Altai, an Amur tiger, at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
Emergency services were called shortly after 1:30 p.m. Despite efforts to save him, Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident has prompted a health and safety investigation by Doncaster Council, the authority responsible for licensing the park.
A childhood spent in front of the camera
News of Chapman’s death has brought attention to his early work in television.
As a child, he appeared in the ITV comedy drama May Contain Nuts, which aired in 2009. He played Alfie Chaplin, the younger son of characters portrayed by Shirley Henderson — known to Harry Potter fans as Moaning Myrtle — and Darren Boyd.
He also appeared in the BBC educational series True Stories in 2012, portraying a young Edward Jenner, the pioneering physician associated with the development of the smallpox vaccine.
Chapman attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Following his death, the school paid tribute to its former student, remembering the opportunity it had to watch him grow as both a person and a performer.
Although his acting career did not continue into adulthood, those early roles remain part of his story.
His family remembers a much-loved son
In a statement reported by RTÉ, Chapman’s family described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” who was dearly loved.
They said they were utterly devastated by his death and struggling to come to terms with what had happened.
The family also revealed that Chapman had experienced significant mental health difficulties over a number of years and had been prescribed strong medication.
They stressed that it would be for the coroner to determine whether his condition or medication played any role in the circumstances surrounding his death.
Their statement also contained a plea to the public: stop sharing distressing footage of the incident.
The family said the continued circulation of such material was causing them severe distress at an already exceptionally painful time.
What happened at Yorkshire Wildlife Park?
Police were alerted after Chapman entered the tiger enclosure while visiting the park alone.
Footage reportedly recorded shortly before the attack appears to show him approaching the animal. The incident was brief, and emergency responders were unable to save him.
Park staff activated emergency procedures, and the site was closed while authorities began investigating.
The park later confirmed that Altai was safe and would not be euthanised. The decision reflects the distinction between an animal behaving according to its natural instincts and a person’s decision to enter an enclosure intended to keep both visitors and wildlife apart.
Investigators seek answers
Doncaster Council confirmed that it had launched a health and safety investigation and was working with police and other agencies.
Authorities have not yet publicly established all the circumstances that led Chapman to enter the enclosure. His family has expressed hope that the investigation and subsequent coronial process will help explain what happened.
For now, the focus remains on understanding the events without adding to the family’s distress through speculation or the spread of graphic material.
A plea for compassion
William Chapman’s death has prompted discussion about wildlife safety, mental health and the responsibility people have when sharing traumatic events online.
But for his family, the loss is intensely personal. They are grieving a son whose life extended far beyond the final moments that have attracted widespread attention.
They want him remembered as the warm and engaging young man they loved — not simply as the subject of a distressing video.
As the investigation continues, their request is clear: respect their privacy, allow the authorities to establish the facts and stop circulating footage that deepens their pain.
Behind the headlines is a grieving family asking for compassion at the hardest time of their lives.
